Unsymmetrical bis-phosphorus ligands. 11. Group VI metal carbonyl derivatives of 1-(diphenylphosphino)-3-(alkylphenylphosphino)propane

Syntheses of the chloroalkyldiphenylphosphines, Cl(CH2)nP(C6H5)2(n = 1, 2, or 3) in high yields are reported. Reaction of magnesium with Cl(CH2)2P(C6H5)2 is followed by β-elimination to produce C2H4 and (C6H5)2P−. However, formation of the Grignard reagent from Cl(CH2)3P(C6H5)2 occurs normally. This Grignard reagent reacts in the expected manner with CO2, (C6H5)3SnCl and (CH3)2PCl, the latter forming an unsymmetrical bis-tertiary phosphine ligand (C6H5)2P(CH2)3P(CH3)2. Other unsymmetrical bis-tertiary phosphine ligands of the series, (C6H5)2P(CH2)3P(C6H5)R, where R = CH3, C2H5, and i-C3H7, were prepared from R(C6H5)PLi and the 3-chloropropyldiphenylphosphine.
