Nonlinear finite element analysis of reinforced concrete beams strengthened by fiber-reinforced plastics

Structural design standards provide the foundation of good engineering practice and a framework for addressing safety and serviceability issues rationally. Structural reliability methods provide the tools for managing uncertainties in modern codified structural design. Current probability-based structural codes are based on performance measures expressed as notional reliabilities of structural components. These notional reliabilities, encapsulated in reliability indices, were obtained by calibrating the proposed codes to traditional practice rather than from quantitative risk analysis. Because the reliability estimates are based on models of real systems, they may not correspond to historical failure rates, and therefore confound the process of risk communication among structural engineers, building or regulatory officials, and the public. The research and professional engineering communities must work together to confront future challenges arising from new trends in structural engineering practice towards tailoring building design to performance expectations of the building owners, occupants and the public. In this context, the prospects of basing future codes on a quantitative acceptable risk measure warrant further examination.

Acceptable risk bases for design of structures

Theoretical studies of the influence of shear deformation on the flexural, torsional, and lateral buckling of pultruded fiber reinforced plastic (FRP)-I-profiles are presented. Theoretical developments are based on the governing energy equations and full section member properties. The solution for flexural buckling is consistent with the established solution based on the governing differential equation. The new solutions for torsional and lateral buckling incorporate a reduction factor similar to that for flexural buckling. The solution for lateral buckling also incorporates the influence of prebuckling displacements. Closed form solutions for a series of simply supported, pultruded FRP I-profiles, based on experimentally determined full section flexural and torsional properties, indicate the following conclusions. Influence of shear deformation on buckling of pultruded fiber reinforced plastic profiles

This report contains the findings of a study to develop a strategic plan for guiding the application of fiber reinforced polymer composites in the highway infrastructure. The report describes the research effort and presents the strategic plan. The material in this report will be of immediate interest to bridge engineers interested in increasing the use of fiber reinforced polymer composites.

A review on FRP-concrete hybrid sections for bridge applications

This paper presents the results of the first phase of a project to develop a national consensus standard for the design, fabrication, and erection of structures constructed from pultruded fiber-reinforced-plastic structural plate, rod, and shapes. The project was undertaken by ASCE for the Pultrusion Industry Council of the Society of the Plastics Industry, Inc. The scope of Phase 1 comprises a literature survey to assemble background information for the effort, and the development of a draft outline of the standard (i.e., a “prestandard”). The effort and significant findings are discussed in this paper. It presents the proposed prestandard outline, which is annotated to include the scope of each chapter and a brief commentary on anticipated provisions.
