The Role of Anesthesia in Surgical Mortality

TL;DR: The role of anesthesia in contributing to surgical mortality has been studied in 33,224 patients given either spinal anesthesia or a general anesthetic to which muscle relaxants were added, and when deaths were related to the use of muscle relaxant, errors of omission or commission were always apparent.
Journal ArticleDOI

Long-term follow-up of patients who received 10,098 spinal anesthetics; syndrome of decreased intracranial pressure (headache and ocular and auditory difficulties).

Leroy D. Vandam, +1 more
- 16 Jun 1956 -
TL;DR: The data on duration and time of onset of the headache, on the effects of postural changes, and on the visual and auditory phenomena indicate that this syndrome results from a decrease in cerebrospinal fluid pressure and that the decrease is caused by leakage of the fluid.
Journal ArticleDOI

Scientific basis for the support of biomedical science

Julius H. Comroe, +1 more
- 09 Apr 1976 -
TL;DR: This project has only one goal: to demonstrate that objective, scientific techniques can be used to design and justify a national biomedical research policy.
Journal ArticleDOI

Long-term follow-up of patients who received 10,098 spinal anesthetics: failure to discover major neurological sequelae.

Robert D. Dripps, +1 more
- 18 Dec 1954 -
TL;DR: Spinal anesthesia, an anesthetic technique with great advantages for the patient, surgeon, and anesthetist, is relatively free from the criticism of toxicity and the mortality associated with general anesthesia; on the other hand, the great hazard of spinal anesthesia in the minds of patients and surgeons is considered.
