TL;DR: In this article, the authors proposed a method for passing a magnetic recording tape having a plurality of data bands over a module as described above, where data is simultaneously transduced on the two data bands using the data transducers.
Abstract: An apparatus, according to one approach, includes two arrays of data transducers on a module, the two arrays being aligned along a common axis extending between distal ends of the module. Outer servo readers are positioned toward outer ends of the two arrays. An inner servo reader is positioned between the two arrays. The servo readers are positioned to each reside above a unique servo track on a magnetic recording tape. A method according to one approach includes passing a magnetic recording tape having a plurality of data bands over a module as described above. Data is simultaneously transduced on the two data bands using the data transducers. Advantageously, the number of simultaneously-usable channels on the module is dramatically increased, thereby also dramatically increasing the data rate per unit of tape speed, while backward compatibility may be preserved.

TL;DR: In this article, the active tunnel magnetoresistive region includes a free layer, a tunnel barrier layer and a reference layer, and at least one of the gaps includes a seed layer of a chromium alloy and an electrically conductive layer having a refractory material formed on the seed layer.
Abstract: In one general approach, an apparatus includes a sensor having an active tunnel magnetoresistive region, magnetic shields flanking the active tunnel magnetoresistive region, and gaps between the active tunnel magnetoresistive region and the magnetic shields. The active tunnel magnetoresistive region includes a free layer, a tunnel barrier layer and a reference layer. At least one of the gaps includes a seed layer of a chromium alloy and an electrically conductive layer having a refractory material formed on the seed layer. The seed layer in this configuration is more resistant to corrosion than elemental chromium when used in a magnetic recording head and/or in a structure exposed to even trace amounts of fluorine.

TL;DR: In this paper, a write transducer has a pair of writer poles having pole tips, the pole tips defining a write gap there between, and a thin film device is positioned at least in part in the write gap for raising a local temperature.
Abstract: An apparatus, in accordance with one embodiment, includes a write transducer having a pair of writer poles having pole tips, the pole tips defining a write gap therebetween. A thin film device is positioned at least in part in the write gap for raising a local temperature of the write gap. Electrical connections for causing a current to pass through the thin film device are also present. A method, in accordance with one embodiment, includes passing a current through a thin film device positioned at least in part in a write gap defined between pole tips of writer poles of a write transducer for causing heating of the thin film device. A level of the current is changed in response to detection of a predefined condition.

TL;DR: In this paper, the expansion elements are arranged side by side along a line extending parallel to a longitudinal axis of the array of transducers, and a controller is configured to individually control an extent of expansion of each expansion element based on feedback from the servo readers.
Abstract: An apparatus, according to one embodiment, includes a module having an array of transducers, and at least two expansion elements positioned proximate the array of transducers. The expansion elements are arranged side by side along a line extending parallel to a longitudinal axis of the array of transducers, wherein the array of transducers includes at least three servo readers. A controller is electrically coupled to the expansion elements, and is configured to individually control an extent of expansion of each expansion element based on feedback from the servo readers.
