Multiple-beam grating interferometry: a comparison of techniques applied to the measurement of coating thickness

Proposed is an electronically agile optical scanning sensor based on wavelength multiplexed optical interferometry. The basic design uses wavelength tuning to enable an optical scanning beam and a wavelength dispersive element like a grating to act as a beam splitter and beam combiner to create the two beams required for interferometry. A compact no-moving parts and environmentally robust design of the sensor is shown that enables an all-fiber in-line low noise delivery sensor using a fiber circulator, optical fiber, and fiber lens connected to a Grating-optic and reflective media sensor chip. The proposed fiber-remoted all-passive sensor can be used in numerous sensing applications where compact size and remoting is highly desired.

Measurement of coating thickness with a multiple-beam grating interferometer

Measurements made on the components and on two assembled systems of a 2-m Ritchey-Chretien telescope have been used to determine the actual characteristics of the telescope. Sufficient precision has been obtained so that other focal ratio systems can be designed.
