A data storage and retrieval device and method is disclosed. The device includes at least one magnetic storage medium configured to store target data and at least one re-configurable logic device comprising an FPGA coupled to the at least one magnetic storage medium and configured to read a continuous stream of target data therefrom, having been configured with a template or as otherwise desired to fit the type of search and data being searched. The re-configurable logic device is configured to receive at least one search inquiry in the form of a data key and to determine a match between the data key and the target data as it is being read from the at least one magnetic storage medium. This device and method can perform a variety of searches on the target data including without limitation exact and approximate match searches, sequence match searches, image match searches and data reduction searches. This device and method may be provided as part of a stand-alone computer system, embodied in a network attached storage device, or can otherwise be provided as part of a computer LAN or WAN. In addition to performing search and data reduction operations, this device may also be used to perform a variety of other processing operations including encryption, decryption, compression, decompression, and combinations thereof.

Disclosed herein is an improved architecture for regular expression pattern matching. Improvements to pattern matching deterministic finite automatons (DFAs) that are described by the inventors include a pipelining strategy that pushes state-dependent feedback to a final pipeline stage to thereby enhance parallelism and throughput, augmented state transitions that track whether a transition is indicative of a pattern match occurring thereby reducing the number of necessary states for the DFA, augmented state transition that track whether a transition is indicative of a restart to the matching process, compression of the DFA's transition table, alphabet encoding for input symbols to equivalence class identifiers, the use of an indirection table to allow for optimized transition table memory, and enhanced scalability to facilitate the ability of the improved DFA to process multiple input symbols per cycle.

Method and device for high performance regular expression pattern matching

An apparatus and method for caching data in a storage device (26) of a computer system (10). A relatively high-speed, intermediate-volume storage device (25) is operated as a user-configurable cache. Requests to access a mass storage device (46) such as a disk or tape (26, 28) are intercepted by a device driver (32) that compares the access request against a directory (51) of the contents of the user-configurable cache (25). If the user-configurable cache contains the data sought to be accessed, the access request is carried out in the user-configurable cache instead of being forwarded to the device driver for the target mass storage device (46). Because the user-cache is implemented using memory having a dramatically shorter access time than most mechanical mass storage devices, the access request is fulfilled much more quickly than if the originally intended mass storage device was accessed. Data is preloaded and responsively cached in the user-configurable cache memory based on user preferences.

Preloading data in a cache memory according to user-specified preload criteria

Aspects of the invention include a method of conducting a reduced length search along a search path. A node which would otherwise occur between a previous and a following node in the search path is eliminated, and information is stored as to whether, had said eliminated node been present, the search would have proceeded to the following node. During the search, a search argument is compared with the stored information, and the search effectively progresses from the previous node directly to the following node if the comparison is positive. In preferred embodiments, some nodes provide result values for the search, and a node is eliminated only if its presence would not affect the result value for the search. In another aspect, the invention features a method of conducting a two mode search of reduced length. For a first mode of the search, nodes along a search path are provided, at least some of the nodes including one or more pointers pointing to other nodes. A search argument comprising a series of search segments is provided, some values of segments of the argument corresponding to nodes along the search path, some other values of the segments relating to a second mode of the search. Indicators associated with nodes are provided, each indicator indicating the segments corresponding to the second mode. The search path is searched by processing successive search segments by inspecting the indicator associated with each node, and proceeding to the second search mode if the indicator indicates that the segment relates to the second mode.

Methods and systems for processing financial market data using reconfigurable logic are disclosed. Various functional operations to be performed on the financial market data can be implemented in firmware pipelines to accelerate the speed of processing. Also, a combination of software logic and firmware logic can be used to efficiently control and manage the high speed flow of financial market data to and from the reconfigurable logic.

High Speed Processing of Financial Information Using FPGA Devices

Serial storage interface apparatus for coupling a serial storage mechanism, such as a charge coupled storage device or a magnetic bubble storage device, to a data processor input/output (I/O) bus. Speed control circuitry is provided for causing the serial storage mechanism to operate at a higher speed when the data processor is responding more rapidly to data transfer requests from the interface apparatus and at a lower speed when the data processor is responding less rapidly to data transfer requests from the interface apparatus. This speed adjustment feature reduces the amount of data buffering required for interfacing a serial storage mechanism to an asynchronous variable response time I/O bus system.

A method and apparatus for performing data base searches in which the host processor and main memory are free for other processing tasks between the time that the host processor requests the search until the search results are reported back to the host processor. To commence the search, an input/output controller communicates from the host processor to a record scan circuit values of a skip length, a key length and a data length. While data records are received serially from disk files, within each data record, a length of data equal to the specified skip length is initially skipped. Following this, a search argument is compared with a length of data specified by the key length value. This comparison operation is alternated with skipping of data specified by the data length value until the end of the record is reached or until a specified number of comparisons has taken place. The data record is stored as it is received from the files. If a successful comparison is found within a data record, either the entire data record or a specified portion thereof can be read back through the controller to the host processor.

Associative file processing method and apparatus

A redundant error-detecting addressing code for use in a cache memory. A directory converts logical data addresses to physical addresses in the cache where the data is stored in blocks. The blocks are expanded to include redundant addressing information such as the logical data address and the physical cache address. When a block is accessed from the cache, the redundant addressing is compared to the directory addressing information to confirm that the correct data has been accessed.

Redundant page identification for a catalogued memory

An I/O controller for a computer system having a plurality of memory devices of different types such as floppy and hard disks, whereinn a single cache memory is employed for all of the memory devices. Each of the memory devices is provided with its own interface device which directs data outputted from the associated memory device onto a common device bus. From the device bus data is transferred to a cache memory via a separate cache bus, and then to a system processor via the same cache bus. Memory space within the cache memory may be allocated among the various memory devices.
