Journal ArticleDOI

Biosynthesis of sphingolipid bases. IV. The biosynthetic origin of sphingosine in Hansenula ciferri.

TL;DR: Fractions convert, 14 C-ammonium palmitate to trams -2-hexadecenoic acid indicating that, in yeast, the biosynthetic pathways of saturated and unsaturated sphingolipids diverge at the fatty acyl CoA level.
Journal ArticleDOI

Biosynthesis of sphingosine and dihydrosphingosine by cell-free systems from Hansenula ciferri.

TL;DR: The desaturation reaction involved in sphingosine biosynthesis thus appears to occur at the fatty acyl CoA level, although the possibility that it occurs at the ketonic level remains open.
Journal ArticleDOI

Biosynthesis of Sphingolipid Bases III. ISOLATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF KETONIC INTERMEDIATES IN THE SYNTHESIS OF SPHINGOSINE AND DIHYDROSPHINGOSINE BY CELL-FREE EXTRACTS OF HANSENULA CIFERRI

TL;DR: It is shown that in yeast the biosynthetic pathways leading to saturated and unsaturated sphingolipid bases diverge at some point before reduction of the ketonic intermediates with TPNH, and that 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazone derivatives are intermediates in the biosynthesis of dihydrosphingosine and sphingosines.
