An analyte monitor includes a sensor, a sensor control unit, and a display unit. The sensor has, for example, a substrate, a recessed channel formed in the substrate, and conductive material disposed in the recessed channel to form a working electrode. The sensor control unit typically has a housing adapted for placement on skin and is adapted to receive a portion of an electrochemical sensor. The sensor control unit also includes two or more conductive contacts disposed on the housing and configured for coupling to two or more contact pads on the sensor. A transmitter is disposed in the housing and coupled to the plurality of conductive contacts for transmitting data obtained using the sensor. The display unit has a receiver for receiving data transmitted by the transmitter of the sensor control unit and a display coupled to the receiver for displaying an indication of a level of an analyte. The analyte monitor may also be part of a drug delivery system to alter the level of the analyte based on the data obtained using the sensor.

Analyte Monitoring Device And Methods Of Use

An endoscopic bipolar forceps includes an elongated shaft having opposing jaw members at a distal end thereof. The jaw members are movable relative to one another from a first position wherein the jaw members are disposed in spaced relation relative to one another to a second position wherein the jaw members cooperate to grasp tissue therebetween. The forceps also includes a source of electrical energy connected to each jaw member such that the jaw members are capable of conducting energy through tissue held therebetween to effect a seal. A generally tube-like cutter is included which is slidably engaged about the elongated shaft and which is selectively movable about the elongated shaft to engage and cut tissue on at least one side of the jaw members while the tissue is engaged between jaw members.

The present invention involves method and apparatus for analyzing two measured signals that are modeled as containing primary and secondary portions. Coefficients relate the two signals according to a model defined in accordance with the present invention. In one embodiment, the present invention involves utilizing a transformation which evaluates a plurality of possible signal coefficients in order to find appropriate coefficients. Alternatively, the present invention involves using statistical functions or Fourier transform and windowing techniques to determine the coefficients relating to two measured signals. Use of this invention is described in particular detail with respect to blood oximetry measurements.

Signal processing apparatus.

A method and an apparatus to analyze two measured signals that are modeled as containing desired and undesired portions such as noise, FM and AM modulation. Coefficients relate the two signals according to a model defined in accordance with the present invention. In one embodiment, a transformation is used to evaluate a ratio of the two measured signals in order to find appropriate coefficients. The measured signals are then fed into a signal scrubber which uses the coefficients to remove the unwanted portions. The signal scrubbing is performed in either the time domain or in the frequency domain. The method and apparatus are particularly advantageous to blood oximetry and pulserate measurements. In another embodiment, an estimate of the pulserate is obtained by applying a set of rules to a spectral transform of the scrubbed signal. In another embodiment, an estimate of the pulserate is obtained by transforming the scrubbed signal from a first spectral domain into a second spectral domain. The pulserate is found by identifying the largest spectral peak in the second spectral domain.

An electrosurgical system is disclosed. The electrosurgical system includes an electrosurgical generator adapted to supply electrosurgical energy to tissue. The electrosurgical generator includes impedance sensing circuitry which measures impedance of tissue, a microprocessor configured to determine whether a tissue reaction has occurred as a function of a minimum impedance value and a predetermined rise in impedance, wherein tissue reaction corresponds to a boiling point of tissue fluid, and an electrosurgical instrument including at least one active electrode adapted to apply electrosurgical energy to tissue.

Vessel sealing system

A pulse oximeter (210) has an integrated mode in which it operates as a plug-in module for a multiparameter patient monitoring system (MPMS) (250). The pulse oximeter (210) also has a portable mode in which operates separately from the MPMS (250) as a battery-powered handheld (500) or a standalone instrument (610). The pulse oximeter (210) has a sensor port that receives a photo-plethysmographic signal as input to an internal processor. The pulse oximeter (210) processes this sensor signal to derive oxygen saturation and pulse rate measurements. In the portable mode, this information is provided on its display (520), and stored in memory (706) for trend capability. A keypad (510) provides a user interface for operational control in the portable mode. In the integrated mode, the pulse oximeter (210) provides oxygen saturation and pulse rate measurements to the MPMS (250) through a communications interface, along with previously stored trend data, and displayed on the MPMS monitor (280). The MPMS (250) also provides external power and operational control of the pulse oximeter (210) in the integrated mode. Alternatively, a docking station (660) operates as a plug-in module that provides a mechanical and electrical interface between a portable pulse oximeter (610) and MPMS instruments from a variety of manufacturers. In the integrated mode, the portable pulse oximeter (610) docks to the docking station (660), which in turn is inserted in one or more MPMS slots (290). The docking station (660) can function as a simple electrical pass-through device between the docked portable pulse oximeter (610) and the MPMS (250) or it can provide a MPMS communications interface.

Dual-mode pulse oximeter

An electrical connector for a medical instrument has a plug containing a plurality of pins in electrical communication with wires emanating from a shielded cable that is connected to a medical sensor detecting physiological data. The plug portion of the electrical connector substantially surrounds the connection of the pins with the cable in a plastic housing. When the plug is inserted into a socket portion of the connector mounted to a medical instrument housing, the pins electrically communicate with a plurality of tubular sockets to communicate the signals to electronic devices in a medical instrument. Surface coatings on the connector are provided to shield the wire connections with the pins and tubular sockets from electromagnetic interference (EMI). A tubular shield is also provided in the medical instrument to shield the electrical connection between the internal cable and the tubular receptacles from EMI. The EMI shields on the connector and the EMI shielding on the connecting cables are all connected to a common ground. A significant reduction in EMI distortion of the sensor signals is achieved.

A sensor port is adapted to connect to either a sensor or a data source. A reader is configured to identify which of the sensor and the data source is connected to the sensor port. A data path is configured to communicate an analog signal associated with the sensor and digital data associated with the data source to a signal processor according to the identification made by the reader.

Multipurpose sensor port

A sensor, such as, for example, a gravity-responsive sensor, provides an output used to select an orientation of a display of a display device. For example, the output may indicate that the orientation of the display should comprise a portrait or landscape orientation, an orientation rotated, such as, for example, ninety degrees (90°), one hundred and eighty degrees (180°), two hundred and seventy degrees (270°), or the like. In addition, one or more manual switches, buttons, or display icons may be actuated or otherwise selected to manually set the orientation of the display.
