EEG-based Brain-Computer Interfaces: An Overview of Basic Concepts and Clinical Applications in Neurorehabilitation
Sergio Machado,Fernanda Araújo,Flávia Paes,Bruna Velasques,Mario Cunha,Henning Budde,Luis F. H. Basile,Renato Anghinah,Oscar Arias-Carrión,Mauricio Cagy,Roberto Piedade,Tom A. de Graaf,Alexander T. Sack,Pedro Ribeiro +13 more
TL;DR: This review focuses on the basic concepts of EEG-based BCI, the main advances in communication, motor control restoration and the downregulation of cortical activity, and the mirror neuron system (MNS) in the context of BCI and suggests that emerging ideas related to clinical neurorehabilitation of severely limited patients will generate viable clinical applications in the near future.
Journal ArticleDOI
Beta and alpha electroencephalographic activity changes after acute exercise
Helena Moraes,Camila Ferreira,Andrea Camaz Deslandes,Mauricio Cagy,Fernando A.M.S. Pompeu,Pedro Ribeiro,Roberto Piedade +6 more
TL;DR: Results indicated a significant absolute power increase in beta after exercise at frontal (Fp1, F3 and F4) and central (C4) areas, which might be related to increased cortical activation.
Journal ArticleDOI
EEG frontal asymmetry in the depressed and remitted elderly: Is it related to the trait or to the state of depression?
Alessandro Carvalho,Helena Moraes,Heitor Silveira,Pedro Ribeiro,Roberto Piedade,Andrea Camaz Deslandes,Andrea Camaz Deslandes,Jerson Laks,Marcio Versiani +8 more
TL;DR: The results showed no evidence of a relationship between frontal asymmetry, quality of life and depression in the elderly and future studies on frontal asymmetric should carefully consider the effects of age.
Journal ArticleDOI
Electroencephalographic frontal asymmetry and depressive symptoms in the elderly.
Andrea Camaz Deslandes,Helena Moraes,Fernando A.M.S. Pompeu,Pedro Ribeiro,Mauricio Cagy,Claudia Capitão,Heloisa Alves,Roberto Piedade,Jerson Laks +8 more
TL;DR: Assessing differences between depressed and normal elderly subjects on alpha asymmetry, and observing the correlations of this measure with depressive symptoms and quality of life found the relationship between depression and frontal asymmetry was better observed in healthy elderly.
Journal ArticleDOI
The mirror neuron system in post-stroke rehabilitation
Diana Maul de Carvalho,Silmar Teixeira,Marina Lucas,Ti-Fei Yuan,Fernanda Chaves,Caroline Peressutti,Sergio Machado,Juliana Bittencourt,Manuel Menéndez-González,Antonio Egidio Nardi,Bruna Velasques,Mauricio Cagy,Roberto Piedade,Pedro Ribeiro,Oscar Arias-Carrión +14 more
TL;DR: The studies showed how the interaction among vision, proprioception and motor commands promotes the recruitment of mirror neurons, thus providing cortical reorganization and functional recovery of post-stroke patients.
