The present invention provides a method and apparatus for the production and labeling of objects in a manner suitable for the prevention and detection of counterfeiting. Thus, the system incorporates a variety of features that make unauthorized reproduction difficult. In addition, the present invention provides an efficient means for the production of labels and verification of authenticity, whereby a recording apparatus which includes a recording medium, having anisotrophic optical domains, along with a means for transferring a portion of the recording medium to a carrier, wherein a bulk portion of the recording medium has macroscopically detectable anisotrophic optical properties and the detecting apparatus thereon.

In some embodiments, the digital content is reformatted before being transferred to the mobile device. The digital content may be streamed from the computer system to the mobile device. A service provider of a network through which the mobile device connects to the digital content provider may bill a user of the mobile device on behalf of the digital content provider. The digital content provider may bill the user of the mobile device using a Premium SMS service.

A file review system includes a mechanism for the auto-registration of users. An author of a file in a file review system defines one or more user profiles. A new user of the system is provided with a user identification and password for a user profile. The user profile has data associated with it to restrict or permit access to the file or to functionality associated with the file review. The new user is assigned a new user definition which inherits the data of the user profile. The new user definition is then used by the new user to access the file of the file review, in the manner defined by the author.

A computer-operated document retrieval system includes a lexicon of words contained in system documents, and a document look-up table that relates words by unique word numbers to the documents. A word look-up table identifies sets of words with common characteristics, specifically prefix value and word length, and a character look-up table identifies whether any word contains a specified character. A target set generator accesses the word look-up table to compose a target word set with characteristics corresponding to the search string. A refining module reduces the target set by selecting a set of characters from the search string, and accessing the character look-up table to identify which target words use the character set. The character look-up table is a boolean array with one bit elements that are processed in groups whose size corresponds to the maximum bit processing count of the computer, effectively culling non-matching words simultaneously. A string comparison module determines whether any word remaining in the target set matches the search string. The system quickly executes various searches, including prefix, exact match, wildcard, and fuzzy searches.

Document retrieval system and search method using word set and character look-up tables

A system for reviewing files which permits comments to be inserted in files to be viewed with a hypertext browser. When the hypertext mark-up language employed is HTML, text files are converted to an HTML representation. An HTML file is represented by a linked list of objects. Comment insertion markers and comment display objects are inserted at predefined points in the HTML linked list representation. The linked list is stored as a binary file and has a comment file associated with it. Access to the HTML file by reviewers and authors causes the regeneration of the HTML document by a Common Gateway Interface which recreates the linked list representation of the document from the binary file and which then generates HTML code from the linked list. Comments may be entered by reviewers working in parallel on the HTML document. Comments are displayed as inserted at the next regeneration of the HTML document by the system.

Web-based file review system utilizing source and comment files

The progressive shortening of software development cycles has led software vendors to seek new ways of delivering their product to the customer. When a software product is updated every two or three months, delivering the product only on CD is not a viable alternative. For projects such as IBM VisualAge® for Java™, where a component-based strategy has been chosen for delivering software function, an equivalent strategy must be devised for delivering product documentation. This paper describes the approach we adopted to componentize the VisualAge for Java help system, and describes the technical challenges the approach posed to IBM writers, and the solutions chosen.

Component-based software development: implications for documentation

An ascending numerical sequence, such as an index of word position values within a file, is variable length binary encoded, and subsequently decoded to derive the original sequence. Encoding involves obtaining certain properties of the sequence, including the first and last element values and the maximum and minimum gaps. Unless the maximum and minimum gaps are equal, each element value between the first and last element of the sequence is reduced and the reduced sequence is further encoded, all according to various rules. Reduction involves stripping the leading 0 bit's and the first 1 bit. Further encoding involves dropping repeating leading bits and storing the resulting binary values in a body having a bitstream format if an element value has the same number of bits as the number of bits in the preceding element value. If an element value has one more bit than the preceding element value and if the value of the first N bits are greater than the value of the previous N bits then a bump code is added before the resulting binary value is stored. If the value of the first N bits are less than the value of the previous N bits and the resulting binary value has N leading 0 bits then a bump code is added before the resulting binary value is stored. In most other circumstances, the resulting binary value is simply stored in the bitstream. If the maximum and minimum gaps are the same then the first and last values and the minimum and maximum gaps are simply stored in the header and no body is stored as the sequence is fully defined. When the length of the body is known then a header is stored that contains the properties of the sequence that permit the sequence to be decoded from the header and body. Corresponding rules permit the decoding of the sequence from the header and body.
