Our efforts to understand the physical, chemical, and biological processes involved in groundwater flow, contaminant transport, and site remediation are made challenging by the limited access we have to the subsurface environment in which they occur. While some recent research projects have collected data that are relatively high in temporal and spatial resolution, at the sites of many environmental investigations the resolution of the data is limited. For this reason, geostatistics has been integrated with hydrogeology to provide methods for quantifying uncertainty where estimation, interpolation, and extrapolation of hydrogeologic attributes are required between and beyond data locations. Hydrogeologic attributes generally do not vary in a maximally disordered fashion but have both random and structured qualities, both of which can be represented by geostatistical models.

THESE two stately volumes, which will be followed by a third, form a worthy memorial of a great man. It has been a labour of love to Prof. Karl Pearson to write them, a piety which must have cost him much, especially in the case of the second volume when the outer eye began to fail. He has earned the deep gratitude of all students of science, for besides giving us a living portrait, he has brought together a readable account of all the more important, not too technical, contributions that Galton made to science. The life, letters and labours of Francis Galton. Vol. I.; 1822-1853

In the field of geostatistics and spatial statistics, variogram based models have proved a very flexible and useful tool. However, such spatial models take into account only interdependencies between pairs of variables, mostly in the form of covariances. In the present work, we point out to the necessity to extend the interdependence models beyond covariance modeling; we summarize some of the difficulties arising when attempting such extensions; and propose an approach to address these difficulties. 
Im Bereich der Geostatistik und der raumlichen Statistik haben sich variogrammbasierte Modelle in der Praxis als ntuzlich und flexibel erwiesen um raumliche Zusammenhange zu beschreiben. Allerdings beziehen diese Modelle nur Wechselwirkungen zwischen Paaren von Variablen, vor allem in Form von Kovarianzen, mit ein. In dieser Dissertation weisen wir auf die Notwendigkeit hin, raumliche Modelle jenseits der Kovarianz Modellierung zu erweitern. Wir fassen einige Schwierigkeiten zusammen, die bei solch einer Erweiterung entstehen. Letztendlich prasentieren wir einen Ansatz, mit dem man diesen Schwierigkeiten behandeln kann.
