Entrepreneurship is increasingly considered to be integral to development; however, social and cultural norms impact on the extent to which women in developing countries engage with, and accrue the benefits of, entrepreneurial activity. Using data collected from 49 members of a rural social enterprise in North India, we examine the relationships between social entrepreneurship, empowerment and social change. Innovative business processes that facilitated women’s economic activity and at the same time complied with local social and cultural norms that constrain their agency contributed to changing the social order itself. We frame emancipatory social entrepreneurship as processes that (1) empower women and (2) contribute to changing the social order in which women are embedded.

Linking Social Entrepreneurship and Social Change: The Mediating Role of Empowerment

This paper addresses a fundamental problem in corporate sustainability: How can corporations transform trade-offs through win–win-oriented governance strategies aimed at creating value? Drawing on new strands of research in business ethics, we employ an ‘ordonomic’ perspective and proceed in four steps. First, we sketch how sustainability semantics has evolved historically from a societal searchlight to a heuristics for business practice. Second, we discuss how business firms can make strategic use of moral commitments as governance contributions by deploying individual or collective self-commitments as well as commitment services in their stakeholder relations. Third, we combine these four governance strategies with the three ESG (‘ecological, social and governance’) criteria of sustainability. We derive and illustrate with real-life examples a 12-box matrix as a tool for the strategic management of corporate sustainability. Commitment strategies for sustainability: how business firms can transform trade-offs into win-win outcomes

With the advent of renewables, white-collar energy experts have embraced a holistic, intersectional politics at odds with the corporate technocratic outlook characteristic of the energy sector. Concomitantly, anti-racist activists have enfolded technocratic energy issues into their intersectional agenda, situating themselves in the technical spaces that produce electricity. In this paper I argue that renewable energy technologies and the intersectional ethos of the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement have operated as a material-discursive node, enabling these coterminous shifts. These shifts are also challenging dominant understandings of what energy fundamentally is amid burgeoning efforts to “democratize” energy. I contend that BLM presents a framework through which we can more radically decolonize energy. Highlighting the historical imbrications of slavery and industrialized energy generation, I argue that colonialism transformed energy – the ability to change matter – into a commoditized form that made certain lives not matter. This framework suggests that pervasive understandings of energy reify colonial hierarchies. As such, I call for intersectional work that reconceptualizes energy in terms of vital relationality. By unleashing energy from its colonial context, we can begin to disentangle the systems through which we change matter from the systems through which certain lives are made to not matter.

This thesis addresses the challenge to Christian mission posed by the rapid rise of urban slum and squatter neighbourhoods in the Majority World. Rather than seeing incarnational mission as a model, method or value, a view of incarnational mission which utilizes the trinitarian motif of enfleshing hope is proposed. This approach has the potential to invite distinctive and effective Christian responses to the challenge of slums.

Introduction: Doctors are essential assets of healthcare institutions in ensuring optimum healthcare delivery to the people. The shortage of doctors has remained a concern worldwide. The Sustainable Development Goal 3(c) by the United Nations, targets substantially increased health financing and the recruitment, development, training and retention of the health workforce; however, progress has been slow. The paper highlights the different stages of development of doctors and interventions implemented for optimising doctor numbers in selected Western Pacific and Southeast Asian countries. Method: A thorough literature search was carried out using PubMed, BMJ, Springer, BMC, and websites of the National Health databases. Articles assessing interventions aimed at recruiting or retaining physicians in Asian countries were included. Results: Forty-three studies met the inclusion criteria; thirty intervention-based studies were retrieved in the final analysis. The research identified gaps and similarities in managing the doctor's workforce in Western Pacific and Southeast Asian countries. The proposed solutions were classified as "rural retention programmes for doctors", "career and professional development", "length of medical education", and "incentivised work-life" to manage the lack of doctors in India. Conclusion: India requires a robust policy approach after understanding the motivations and barriers to retaining in the health system. The interventions proposed in this paper build on regional insights and strategies to help develop a concerted and targeted response to the doctor shortage.

Strategies for optimising doctor numbers in Western pacific and Asian Countries: The path travelled

Objective To determine the effectiveness of telehealth interventions in reducing community falls risk or rates compared to equivalent in-person interventions in adults with neurological conditions. Data Sources Eight electronic databases, trial registries and search engines were searched for the concepts ‘falls’, ‘neurological conditions’, and ‘telehealth’, limited to English language, from inception until August 2022. Review methods Search for original research where the intervention was delivered via synchronous videoconferencing with the aim of reducing falls and falls-related outcomes. Screening and risk of bias assessment were completed by two independent researchers. Outcome data included falls rates, falls-related outcomes, safety, feasibility, and acceptability. Risk of bias was assessed using the ROB-2 and ROBINS-I tools. Quality of evidence was rated with the grading of recommendations, assessment, development and evaluation (GRADE) approach. Results Seventeen studies with 581 participants were included; six were randomised controlled trials. Risk of bias ranged from low to high. Only one study (n = 76) reported falls and did not find differences between telehealth and in-person physiotherapy. There was low-quality evidence that telehealth interventions improve balance outcomes more than face-to-face interventions (pooled between-group mean difference 2.48 Berg Balance Scale units, 95%CI 0.77 to 4.20). Fear of falling was not different between intervention delivery modes. Conclusion Findings suggest that telehealth delivered falls prevention interventions are safe, feasible and acceptable in community-dwelling adults with neurological conditions, however, data related to effectiveness in reducing falls is limited. Low-quality evidence suggests that telehealth may deliver similar or better outcomes for standing balance in this population. PROSPERO Registration: (CRD42021240167).
