Since 65 million years ago (Ma), Earth's climate has undergone a significant and complex evolution, the finer details of which are now coming to light through investigations of deep-sea sediment cores. This evolution includes gradual trends of warming and cooling driven by tectonic processes on time scales of 10(5) to 10(7) years, rhythmic or periodic cycles driven by orbital processes with 10(4)- to 10(6)-year cyclicity, and rare rapid aberrant shifts and extreme climate transients with durations of 10(3) to 10(5) years. Here, recent progress in defining the evolution of global climate over the Cenozoic Era is reviewed. We focus primarily on the periodic and anomalous components of variability over the early portion of this era, as constrained by the latest generation of deep-sea isotope records. We also consider how this improved perspective has led to the recognition of previously unforeseen mechanisms for altering climate.

The chemical composition of subducting sediment and its consequences for the crust and mantle

Two models, a simple cooling model and the plate model, have been advanced to account for the variation in depth and heat flow with increasing age of the ocean floor. The simple cooling model predicts a linear relation between depth and t½, and heat flow and 1/t½, where t is the age of the ocean floor. We show that the same t½ dependence is implicit in the solutions for the plate model for sufficiently young ocean floor. For larger ages these relations break down, and depth and heat flow decay exponentially to constant values. The two forms of the solution are developed to provide a simple method of inverting the data to give the model parameters. The empirical depth versus age relation for the North Pacific and North Atlantic has been extended out to 160 m.y. B.P. The depth initially increases as t½, but between 60 and 80 m.y. B.P. the variation of depth with age departs from this simple relation. For older ocean floor the depth decays exponentially with age toward a constant asymptotic value. Such characteristics would be produced by a thermal structure close to that of the plate model. Inverting the data gives a plate thickness of 125±10 km, a bottom boundary temperature of 1350°±275°C, and a thermal expansion coefficient of (3.2±1.1) × 10−5°C−1. Between 0 and 70 m.y. B.P. the depth can be represented by the relation d(t) = 2500 + 350t½ m, with t in m.y. B.P., and for regions older than 20 m.y. B.P. by the relation d(t) = 6400 - 3200 exp (−t/62.8) m. The heat flow data were treated in a similar, but less extensive manner. Although the data are compatible with the same model that accounts for the topography, their scatter prevents their use in the same quantitative fashion. Our analysis shows that the heat flow only responds to the bottom boundary at approximately twice the age at which the depth does. Within the scatter of the data, from 0 to 120 m.y. B.P., the heat flow pan be represented by the relation q(t) = 11.3/t½ μcal cm−2s−1. The previously accepted view that the heat flow observations approach a constant asymptotic value in the old ocean basins needs to be tested more stringently. The above results imply that a mechanism is required to supply heat at the base of the plate.

An analysis of the variation of ocean floor bathymetry and heat flow with age

The overall mechanics of fold-and-thrust belts and accretionary wedges along compressive plate boundaries is considered to be analogous to that of a wedge of soil or snow in front of a moving bulldozer. The material within the wedge deforms until a critical taper is attained, after which it slides stably, continuing to grow at constant taper as additional material is encountered at the toe. The critical taper is the shape for which the wedge is on the verge of failure under horizontal compression everywhere, including the basal decollement. A wedge of less than critical taper will not slide when pushed but will deform internally, steepening its surface slope until the critical taper is attained. Common silicate sediments and rocks in the upper 10-15 km of the crust have pressure-dependent brittle compressive strengths which can be approximately represented by the empirical Coulomb failure criterion, modified to account for the weakening effects of pore fluid pressure. A simple analytical theory that predicts the critical tapers of subaerial and submarine Coulomb wedges is developed and tested quantitatively in three ways: First, laboratory model experiments with dry sand match the theory. Second, the known surface slope, basal dip, and pore fluid pressures in the active fold-and-thrust belt of western Taiwan are used to determine the effective coefficient of internal friction within the wedge,/x = 1.03, consistent with Byerlee's empirical law of sliding friction,/at, = 0.85, on the base. This excess of internal strength over basal friction suggests that although the Taiwan wedge is highly deformed by imbricate thrusting, it is not so pervasively fractured that frictional sliding is always possible on surfaces of optimum orientation. Instead, the overall internal strength apparently is controlled by frictional sliding along suboptimally oriented planes and by the need to fracture some parts of the observed geometrically complex structure for continued deformation. Third, using the above values of/at, and/x, we predict Hubbert-Rubey fluid pressure ratios X = Xt, for a number of other active subaerial and submarine accretionary wedges based on their observed tapers, finding values everywhere in excess of hydrostatic. These predicted overpressures are reasonable in light of petroleum drilling experience in general and agree with nearby fragmentary well data in specific wedges where they are available. The pressure-dependent Coulomb wedge theory developed here is expected to break down if the decollement exhibits pressure-independent plastic behavior because of either temperature or rock type. The effects of this breakdown are observed in the abrupt decrease in taper where wedge thicknesses exceed about 15 km, which is the predicted depth of the brittle-plastic transition in quartz-rich rocks for typical geothermal gradients. We conclude that fold-and-thrust belts and accretionary wedges have the mechanics of bulldozer wedges in compression and that normal laboratory fracture and frictional strengths are appropriate to mountain-building processes in the upper crust, above the brittle-plastic transition.

Tectonic processes associated with subduction of oceanic crust, but unrelated to the collision of thick crustal masses or microplates, are presumed by many geologists to significantly affect the formation and deformation of large sedimentary bodies at underthrust ocean margins. More geologists are familiar with the concept of subduction accretion , which describes the tectonic attachment of rock and sediment masses to the margin9s bedrock framework, than with other noncollision processes—for example, sediment subduction, subduction erosion , and subduction kneading . These are equally important processes controlling the geologic evolution of underthrust margins, and any one of them may predominate at a given place. In our opinion, no single subduction-related tectonic process is the dominant or typical one that forges the geologic framework of modern underthrust ocean margins. It is likely, therefore, that the rock records of ancient underthrust margins are preserved in a multitude of structural and stratigraphic forms.

Sedimentary masses and concepts about tectonic processes at underthrust ocean margins

The hypotheses of sea-floor spreading and plate tectonics require the removal of sediment from oceanic trenches either by crustal underthrusting or by folding against the base of a continental or insular margin. Accordingly, over a period of time the volume of sediment removed by way of spreading must be equal to the difference between the observable volume of undeformed terrigenous deposits in a trench and the volume contributed to it by continental erosion. To assess possible sediment loss from the central Chilean segment (23°–44° S.) of the Peru-Chile Trench, we have compared the volume of terrigenous deposits overlying the land, the continental margin, and filling the trench with that expected from continental denudation. Our data indicate that an episode of sediment removal occurred at the base of the margin and adjacent deep-sea floor in Late Cretaceous and perhaps earlymost Tertiary time and may imply spreading. Nearly 100 × 10 3 km 3 of deposits of Tertiary age, chiefly Eocene to Pliocene, have accumulated on the margin, and perhaps an additional 5 × 10 3 km 3 in the trench. This amount of offshore sediment could be supplied by fairly low rates (3 cm/10 3 yrs) of Tertiary erosion. However, many uncertainties in our denudation-sedimentation budget make it impossible to determine whether or not sediment reaching the base of the margin was removed tectonically in Tertiary time. Between 27° and 44° S., the trench contains nearly 70 × 10 s km 3 of turbidite deposits that we believe accumulated during late Cenozoic periods of glacially lowered sea level. The volume of turbidites in the trench is virtually equal to that expected from continental erosion, which is estimated to have probably been no greater than 5 cm/10 3 yr for the arid region between 27° and 31°, and 50 cm/10 3 yr for the humid and partially glaciated region from 36° to 42°. During this time of rapid erosion and trench filling, magnetic data indicate that convergence of lithospheric plates was taking place below the trench at a rate between 5 and 10 cm/yr. If turbidite deposits were swept from the trench at these rates, then continental denudation must have been exceedingly rapid: 20–40 cm/10 3 yr for the arid zone, and 110–165 cm/10 3 yr for the partially glaciated region. If more conventional estimates of erosion are valid, then either (1) late Cenozoic underthrusting has not taken place (or at a rate much slower than that implied by geophysical data), or (2) underthrusting at the prescribed rates has not involved the removal of a significant volume of sediment from the trench.

Peru-Chile Trench Sediments and Sea-Floor Spreading

Along the International Program of Ocean Drilling (IPOD) Japan Trench transect, a mid-Cenozoic period of tectonism without arc volcanism separated an earlier Cretaceous to Paleogene and a later Neogene period of plate convergence and subduction. The Cretaceous to early Paleogene period of convergence is evidenced by andesitic volcanism associated with a large syncline, probably a forearc basin. The seaward flank of the basin is a tectonically thickened sediment sequence inferred to be an accretionary complex. The arc, the syncline, and the thickened sediment sequence resemble an arc-trench system of the size and structure of the Great Valley forearc basin and Franciscan accretionary complex of California, and they were probably continuations of the Yezo geosyncline and associated sequences exposed to the north on Hokkaido. The arc-trench system is contemporaneous with the adjacent Shimanto arc-trench system southwest of Tokyo Bay. In the early Paleogene, volcanism ceased, and part of the thickened sediment sequence of the Cretaceous-Paleogene margin was emergent as a 160-km-wide landmass which is recognized in seismic records as a later Paleogene sediment source. At the end of the Paleogene, this landmass began to subside and volcanism began again, but it was located first briefly on the east, and then on the west of the Cretaceous arc along the present arc of northern Honshu. The land-mass erosion surface is clearly visible as an angular unconformity in multichannel seismic-reflection records; the sequence of Neogene sediment, explosive volcanism, and benthic foraminiferal assemblages recording subsidence from subareal conditions to the present bathyal depths have been studied in Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) cores. Cretaceous subduction appears to have resulted in a very extensive accretionary complex, whereas the Neogene subduction period appears to have been marked by little net accretion in the forearc area but massive subsidence and some erosion of the front of the convergent margin.

A summary of Cenozoic tectonic history along the IPOD Japan Trench transect

Seismic reflection data recorded near ODP Site 688, offshore Peru, exhibit a persistent bottom-simulating reflector (BSR) from a depth corresponding to the theoretical base of the gas hydrate stability field. Although gas hydrate has been recovered in cores from scientific drilling in both the Pacific and the Atlantic, drilling in areas exhibiting a BSR has usually been avoided because of the perceived risk of releasing free gas trapped beneath the hydrated sediments. To carry out a quantitative analysis of the BSR, the seismic data were reprocessed using signature deconvolution and true amplitude recovery techniques. Synthetic seismograms that were created using acoustic parameters extracted from the seismic data and physical properties from Site 688 borehole measurement were compared to the observed seismic data to estimate the thickness of the free-gas zone. Results indicate the BSR is discontinuous laterally. Where the BSR is of high amplitude, free gas in a zone 5.5-17 m thick beneath the hydrated sediments provides the observed waveform; where the BSR amplitude is low, the free-gas zone is much thinner than 5.5 m or is entirely absent.
