An exact closed form solution for the disturbance due to a circularly symmetric load spreading arbitrarily from a point on the surface of an acoustic half-space is presented using the Laplace and Hankel transforms. The pressure distribution inside the loaded area is assumed uniform at each time. Wave-front surfaces are discovered and analyzed. Explicit expressions for stress and surface displacement fields are obtained. Simple formulas for the stresses on the axis of symmetry and at the wave front are given.

Disturbance from a circularly symmetric load spreading over an acoustic half-space

Consideration of Rayleigh wave effects in a homogeneous isotropic linearly elastic half-space subject to an impulsive uniform disk pressure loading. An approximate formula is obtained for the Rayleigh wave effects. It is shown that the Rayleigh waves near the center of loading arise from the portion of the dilatational and shear waves moving toward the axis, after they originate at the edge of the load disk. A study is made of the vertical displacement due to Rayleigh waves at points on the axis near the surface of the elastic half-space.

Rayleigh Wave Effects in an Elastic Half-space

Displacements due to Rayleigh waves are produced by nuclear bursts acting on the surface of a semi-infinite elastic half-space producing a time decaying pressure pulse that acts over a circular surface area of increasing radius. Expressions for the Rayleigh wave displacements produced by a concentrated load on the surface of the medium are used as influence functions to construct, by means of suitable integrations in space and time, the corresponding quantities produced by the pressure distributions from a nuclear burst. Numerical results and procedures are noted and the application of the method to the design of undergound facilities is outlined.
