This book by a teacher of statistics (as well as a consultant for \"experimenters\") is a comprehensive study of the philosophical background for the statistical design of experiment. It is necessary to have some facility with algebraic notation and manipulation to be able to use the volume intelligently. The problems are presented from the theoretical point of view, without such practical examples as would be helpful for those not acquainted with mathematics. The mathematical justification for the techniques is given. As a somewhat advanced treatment of the design and analysis of experiments, this volume will be interesting and helpful for many who approach statistics theoretically as well as practically. With emphasis on the \"why,\" and with description given broadly, the author relates the subject matter to the general theory of statistics and to the general problem of experimental inference. The Design and Analysis of Experiments

Advances in wireless technologies, low-power electronics, the internet of things, and in the domain of connected health are driving innovations in wearable medical devices at a tremendous pace. Wearable sensor systems composed of flexible and stretchable materials have the potential to better interface to the human skin, whereas silicon-based electronics are extremely efficient in sensor data processing and transmission. Therefore, flexible and stretchable sensors combined with low-power silicon-based electronics are a viable and efficient approach for medical monitoring. Flexible medical devices designed for monitoring human vital signs, such as body temperature, heart rate, respiration rate, blood pressure, pulse oxygenation, and blood glucose have applications in both fitness monitoring and medical diagnostics. As a review of the latest development in flexible and wearable human vitals sensors, the essential components required for vitals sensors are outlined and discussed here, including the reported sensor systems, sensing mechanisms, sensor fabrication, power, and data processing requirements.

Electromagnetic Band Gap Structures in Antenna Engineering

Microfluidics is an emerging field that has given rise to a large number of scientific and technological developments over the last few years. This review reports on the use of various materials, such as silicon, glass and polymers, and their related technologies for the manufacturing of simple microchannels and complex systems. It also presents the main application fields concerned with the different technologies and the most significant results reported by academic and industrial teams. Finally, it demonstrates the advantage of developing approaches for associating polymer technologies for manufacturing of fluidic elements with integration of active or sensitive elements, particularly silicon devices.

Lab-on-chip technologies: making a microfluidic network and coupling it into a complete microsystem : a review

A broadband dual-polarized planar antenna is proposed for 2G/3G/LTE base stations. The dual-polarized antenna is composed of two perpendicularly crossed bow-tie dipoles. Each bow-tie dipole is excited by a microstrip stub that is directly fed by a coaxial line, making the dual-polarized antenna full planar. Due to the coupling between two crossed bow-tie dipoles, a broad bandwidth is achieved. It is shown that the dual-polarized antenna has a bandwidth of 45% (1.7-2.7 GHz) for return loss >15 dB with an isolation of higher than 30 dB between two polarization input ports. The dual-polarized antenna has a half-power beam width (HPBW) of around 65 ° and an average gain of 8.5 dBi for slant ±45° polarizations. An 8-element dual-polarized planar antenna array is developed for base station applications. A bandwidth of 56% (1.63-2.9 GHz) is obtained for the antenna array. The antenna gain of the array is about 16 dBi and the HPBW is 65±8° for each polarization.

A Broadband Dual-Polarized Planar Antenna for 2G/3G/LTE Base Stations

A new type of compact dual-band directional antenna is proposed for 2.4/5-GHz wireless access point and RFID reader applications. The dual-band antenna consists of a longer dipole for the lower band and a pair of shorter dipoles for the upper band. A simple coupling microstrip line is employed to excite the dipoles. Both the dual-band antenna and the feeding microstrip line are printed on the same substrate, leading to a fully planar structure. The length of the dipole for the lower band is shortened by a capacitive loading at each end of the dipole, offering a compact antenna configuration. The compact dual-band antenna achieves a desirable directional radiation pattern with an antenna gain of near 8 dBi for the lower band and 9-10 dBi for the upper band. An equivalent circuit analysis for the design of the dual-band directional antenna is presented.

Analysis and Design of a Compact Dual-Band Directional Antenna

A novel broadband planar antenna is developed for mobile communication base stations. The antenna is composed of a pair of folded dipoles which are coupling fed by an L-shaped microstrip line. Both the dipoles and the coupling microstrip line are etched on the same substrate. The planar antenna achieves a bandwidth of 53% for ${\rm return\ loss} > 15$ dB, covering the frequency range 1.65–2.85 GHz for 2G/3G/LTE applications. The antenna gain of the broadband antenna element is about 9 dBi. A ${\pm}45^{\circ}$ dual-polarized planar antenna consisting of two broadband antenna elements is proposed, which achieves a bandwidth of about 50% and an isolation of 30 dB. Two 8-element antenna arrays are developed respectively for the broadband antenna and for the ${\pm}45^{\circ}$ dual-polarized antenna. Both antenna arrays achieve a bandwidth of more than 58% (1.6–2.9 GHz). The antenna gains achieved for the both antenna arrays are higher than 15.5 dBi. The half-power beam widths in the horizontal plane for the antenna arrays are approximately $65\pm 10^{\circ}$ , suitable for base station applications.

A Novel Broadband Planar Antenna for 2G/3G/LTE Base Stations

A broadband vertically/horizontally dual-polarized omnidirectional antenna is proposed for mobile communications. The dual-polarized antenna is a combination of a modified low-profile monopole for vertical polarization (VP) and a circular planar loop for horizontal polarization (HP). The modified low-profile monopole is a circular folded patch shorted by four tubes while the circular loop consists of four half-wavelength arc dipoles. The dual-polarized omnidirectional antenna achieves a bandwidth of ~ 25% (1.7-2.2 GHz) with an isolation of around 40 dB. The gain variations in the horizontal plane are less than 2.5 dB for VP and 1.5 dB for HP. An eight-element dual-polarized antenna array is developed for base station applications. The antenna gains of the array for both VP and HP are ~ 8 dBi with a difference of less than 1 dB. The beamwidths in the vertical plane are 9±1° for VP and 9±1.5° for HP. The cross-polarization levels in the horizontal plane for both VP and HP are lower than -20 dB.

A Broadband Dual-Polarized Omnidirectional Antenna for Base Stations

A novel dual-broadband multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) antenna system is developed. The MIMO antenna system consists of two dual-broadband antenna elements, each of which comprises two opened loops: an outer loop and an inner loop. The opened outer loop acts as a half-wave dipole and is excited by electromagnetic coupling from the inner loop, leading to a broadband performance for the lower band. The opened inner loop serves as two monopoles. A combination of the two monopoles and the higher modes from the outer loop results in a broadband performance for the upper band. The bandwidths (return loss >;10 dB) achieved for the dual-broadband antenna element are 1.5-2.8 GHz (~ 60%) for the lower band and 4.7-8.5 GHz (~ 58\%) for the upper band. Two U-shaped slots are introduced to reduce the coupling between the two dual-broadband antenna elements. The isolation achieved is higher than 15 dB in the lower band and 20 dB in the upper band, leading to an envelope correlation coefficient of less than 0.01. The dual-broadband MIMO antenna system has a compact volume of 50×17×0.8 mm3, suitable for GSM/UMTS/LTE and WLAN communication handsets.
