This article discusses finite element Galerkin schemes for a number of linear model problems in electromagnetism. The finite element schemes are introduced as discrete differential forms, matching the coordinate-independent statement of Maxwell's equations in the calculus of differential forms. The asymptotic convergence of discrete solutions is investigated theoretically. As discrete differential forms represent a genuine generalization of conventional Lagrangian finite elements, the analysis is based upon a judicious adaptation of established techniques in the theory of finite elements. Risks and difficulties haunting finite element schemes that do not fit the framework of discrete differential forms are highlighted.

Finite elements in computational electromagnetism

This paper proposes a three-dimensional meshfree method for arbitrary crack initiation and propagation that ensures crack path continuity for non-linear material models and cohesive laws. The method is based on a local partition of unity. An extrinsic enrichment of the meshfree shape functions is used with discontinuous and near-front branch functions to close the crack front and improve accuracy. The crack is hereby modeled as a jump in the displacement field. The initiation and propagation of a crack is determined by the loss of hyperbolicity or the loss of material stability criterion. The method is applied to several static, quasi-static and dynamic crack problems. The numerical results very precisely replicate available experimental and analytical results.

A three-dimensional meshfree method for continuous multiple-crack initiation, propagation and junction in statics and dynamics

This is a survey on the theory of adaptive finite element methods (AFEM), which are fundamental in modern computational science and engineering. We present a self-contained and up-to-date discussion of AFEM for linear second order elliptic partial differential equations (PDEs) and dimension d>1, with emphasis on the differences and advantages of AFEM over standard FEM. The material is organized in chapters with problems that extend and complement the theory. We start with the functional framework, inf-sup theory, and Petrov-Galerkin method, which are the basis of FEM. We next address four topics of essence in the theory of AFEM that cannot be found in one single article: mesh refinement by bisection, piecewise polynomial approximation in graded meshes, a posteriori error analysis, and convergence and optimal decay rates of AFEM. The first topic is of geometric and combinatorial nature, and describes bisection as a rather simple and efficient technique to create conforming graded meshes with optimal complexity. The second topic explores the potentials of FEM to compensate singular behavior with local resolution and so reach optimal error decay. This theory, although insightful, is insufficient to deal with PDEs since it relies on knowing the exact solution. The third topic provides the missing link, namely a posteriori error estimators, which hinge exclusively on accessible data: we restrict ourselves to the simplest residual-type estimators and present a complete discussion of upper and lower bounds, along with the concept of oscillation and its critical role. The fourth topic refers to the convergence of adaptive loops and its comparison with quasi-uniform refinement. We first show, under rather modest assumptions on the problem class and AFEM, convergence in the natural norm associated to the variational formulation. We next restrict the problem class to coercive symmetric bilinear forms, and show that AFEM is a contraction for a suitable error notion involving the induced energy norm. This property is then instrumental to prove optimal cardinality of AFEM for a class of singular functions, for which the standard FEM is suboptimal.

Theory of adaptive finite element methods: An introduction

Reliable a posteriori error estimates without generic constants can be obtained by a comparison of the finite element solution with a feasible function for the dual problem. A cheap computation of such functions via equilibration is well known for scalar equations of second order. We simplify and modify the equilibration such that it can be applied to the curl-curl equation and edge elements. The construction is more involved for edge elements since the equilibration has to be performed on subsets with different dimensions. For this reason, Raviart-Thomas elements are extended in the spirit of distributions.

Maxwell equations are posed as variational boundary value problems in the function space H(curl) and are discretized by Nedelec finite elements. In Beck et al., 2000, a residual type a posteriori error estimator was proposed and analyzed under certain conditions onto the domain. In the present paper, we prove the reliability of that error estimator on Lipschitz domains. The key is to establish new error estimates for the commuting quasi-interpolation operators recently introduced in J. Schoberl, Commuting quasi-interpolation operators for mixed finite elements. Similar estimates are required for additive Schwarz preconditioning. To incorporate boundary conditions, we establish a new extension result.

A posteriori error estimates for Maxwell equations

We consider H (curl ;Ω)-elliptic problems that have been discretized by means of Nedelec's edge elements on tetrahedral meshes. Such problems occur in the numerical computation of eddy currents. From the defect equation we derive localized expressions that can be used as a posteriori error estimators to control adaptive refinement. Under certain assumptions on material parameters and computational domains, we derive local lower bounds and a global upper bound for the total error measured in the energy norm. The fundamental tool in the numerical analysis is a Helmholtz-type decomposition of the error into an irrotational part and a weakly solenoidal part.
