A power converter nearly losslessly delivers energy and recovers energy from capacitors associated with controlled rectifiers in a secondary winding circuit, each controlled rectifier having a parallel uncontrolled rectifier. First and second primary switches in series with first and second primary windings, respectively, are turned on for a fixed duty cycle, each for approximately one half of the switching cycle. Switched transition times are short relative to the on-state and off-state times of the controlled rectifiers. The control inputs to the controlled rectifiers are cross-coupled from opposite secondary transformer windings.

High efficiency power converter

A power train of an uninterruptible power supply selectively transforms its load from a primary source of power to a reserve source of power under control of a stored program control operating in real time. A microprocessor operating in conjunction with a prioritized interrupt controller and a plurality of external counters monitors and responds to signal conditions existing at various points of the power supply. In particular, the amplitude of a primary AC voltage source is sampled at precise angles of the sinusoidal waveform in response to a comb pulse waveform generated to conform to the actual period of the primary AC voltage. The frequencies range is determined by comparing a count interval to the period of the primary AC voltage. Relative power flow from the primary AC voltage source and a reserve AC voltage signal is controlled by relative phasing of the two signals. The reserve AC voltage signal is adjusted in phase during normal operation when all power is supplied by the primary AC voltage source by comparison to an AC output signal of the power supply to either null power dissipation in the generator of the reserve AC voltage signal or to supply charging current to its energizing DC voltage source.

The transformer includes a first primary winding and a second primary winding. The first primary circuit is for coupling a first power source to the first primary winding. Dual input DC-to-DC power converter

An uninterruptable power supply supplies a regulated output by utilizing a ferroresonant transformer. Two independent inputs are connected to the transformer; one input is connected to a commercial AC line signal source, the other input is connected to a battery energized static inverter circuit. The AC line source normally supplies the output power. A phase control system monitors the phase of the regulated output signal and constrains the static inverter to run in phase with the output. The phase and magnitude of the AC line signal are monitored. If the magnitude of the AC line drops significantly, the static inverter is constrained to operate in phase with the AC line signal wherein the inverter and AC line both share to contribute power to the output load. If the AC line signal fails, the static inverter operates independently and supplies all of the output power to the load.
