A display has a first array of pixels connected to emit individually-controlled amounts of light onto a second array of pixels. The second array of pixels is connected to pass individually-controllable portions of the light. The display has a controller connected to control the pixels of the first and second arrays of pixels. The controller is configured to control the pixels of the first array of pixels to provide on the second array of pixels an approximation of an image specified by image data; determine a difference between the image and the approximation of the image at individual pixels of the second array of pixels; and control the pixels of the second array of pixels to modulate the approximation of the image according to the corresponding determined differences.

An imaging optical system transmits a primary image. The optical system does not form an intermediate image. The primary image is projected on a screen as a secondary image. The optical system has a projection optical system and a reflection optical system. An optical axis of the reflection optical system forms an angle other than 90° with respect to a screen-side image surface.

Imaging optical system

The wide angle lens system described herein allows projection devices (e.g., rear projection display devices) to be more compact than would otherwise be possible. The lens system includes a wide angle lens stage and a relay lens stage. When operating as a projection device, the relay lens stage projects a distorted intermediate image to the wide angle lens stage, which projects the image for display. The distortion cause by the relay lens stage compensates (i.e., is approximately equal and opposite) for the distortion caused by the wide angle stage. The distortion can be the image shape and/or the focal plane. When operating as a taking device, the wide angle stage provides a distorted image to the relay lens stage, which compensates for the distortion and provide a less distorted, or even non-distorted image, for capture.

CONSTITUTION:A pupil conjugation connecting elements (device) 30 is constituted of eccentric Fresnel lenses 31, 32 divided into two sheets, correction lenses 33, 34 inserted between the Fresnel lenses 31 and 32. The center F1 of the eccentric Fresnel lenses 31 and 32 is made eccentric to the center F2 of correction lenses 33 and 34. When the eccentric Fresnel lenses 31 and 34 are arranged by shifting from an inter-mediate image 13 in this way, Fresnel fringes of eccentric Fresnel lenses 31 and 32 are made to be a defocus state to a projection lens 21 of a second projection lens system 20. Thus, the image of the fringes is never formed inside a projected image.

CONSTITUTION:A light source 1 consists of three light sources 1a-1c provided along the long-side direction of the microlenses for which section shape in the fly-eye lens 4 is almost rectangular. Then extra-high pressure mercury lamps 2a-2c and elliptic reflecting mirrors 3a-3c are combined. Further, the respective elements are so arranged that the light from the light source 1 is converged on the incidence surface of the fly-eye lens 4. The light from the light source 1 is made incident on the fly-eye lens 4 and the projection light from the projection surface of the fly-eye lens 4 is converged by a condenser lens 5 and then transmitted through the lighting object provided in a rectangular lighting area 6 to be made incident on a projection optical system 7.
