Compliant contact force models in multibody dynamics : evolution of the Hertz contact theory

This paper provides an overview of the latest advances in road vehicle suspension design, dynamics, and control, together with the authors' perspectives, in the context of vehicle ride, handling, and stability. The general aspects of road vehicle suspension dynamics and design are discussed, followed by descriptions of road-roughness excitations with a particular emphasis on road potholes. Passive suspension system designs and their effects on road vehicle dynamics and stability are presented in terms of in-plane and full-vehicle arrangements. Controlled suspensions are also reviewed and discussed. The paper concludes with some potential research topics, in particular those associated with the development of hybrid and electric vehicles.

Editors’ perspectives: road vehicle suspension design, dynamics, and control

The historical developments in the discipline of engineering dynamics are briefly reviewed, with attention paid to the formulation and solution of the dynamic behaviour of multi-body systems. It is shown that the dynamic characteristics of practical multi-body systems are dependent upon the interactions of many physical phenomena that can induce, restrain or constrain motion of parts. The long process of understanding and formulating the physics of multi-body motions, in some cases with pioneering contributions centuries old, together with continual refinements in numerical techniques and enhanced computing power has resulted in the solution of quite complex and practical engi- neering problems. Linking the historical developments to the fundamental physical phenomena and their interactions, the paper presents solutions to two complex multi-body dynamic problems. The practical implications of the approach in design of these systems are highlighted.

Multi-body dynamics: Historical evolution and application:

The impact is one of the most abundant phenomena in the field of multi-body dynamics when two or more bodies come in close vicinity and depending on the interaction properties and geometry, all the interacting bodies experience certain impulsive force for an infinitesimal duration. Nowadays, impact modelling becomes an intrinsic part in the modelling of structural pounding, granular materials, crash and machinery analysis, robotics and bio-mechatronics applications. Since the time of Newton, numerous literatures have been published on the modelling of both normal and oblique contact phenomena. The scope of this critical review is limited to consolidate the existing knowledge on the computational model of normal directional impact on rigid bodies. The literature related to modelling of oblique impact, soft body impact, impact damage in composites and associated stress wave propagation are excluded from the scope of this critical review. Smooth and non-smooth mechanics are two schools of thought in simulating the normal directional impact. In this review, the shortcomings of all the classes of compliance and non-smooth models are analysed in the unified dimensionless frame-work to compare their response output with the conventional stereo-mechanical model. This review opens a new avenue for future researchers in selecting a proper contact formulation for specific application.

Lateral control of an autonomous vehicle using integrated backstepping and sliding mode controller

This paper presents a 94 degrees of freedom non-linear multi-body dynamics model of a vehicle comprising front and rear suspensions, steering system, road wheels, tyres and vehicle inertia. The model incorporates all sources of compliance: stiffness and damping, all with non-linear characteristics. The model is used for the purpose of vehicle handling analysis. A simulation run, pertaining to a double lane change is undertaken in-line with the ISO 3888 standard.

Multi-Body Dynamics in Full-Vehicle Handling Analysis under Transient Manoeuvre

This paper presents a multidegrees-of-freedom non-linear multibody dynamic model of a vehicle, comprising front and rear suspensions, steering system, road wheels, tyres and vehicle inertia. The model incorporates all sources of compliance, stiffness and damping, all with non-linear characteristics. The vehicle model is created in ADAMS (automatic dynamic analysis of mechanical systems) formulation. The model is used for the purpose of vehicle handling analysis. Simulation runs, in-line with vehicle manoeuvres specified under ISO and British Standards, have been undertaken and reported in the paper.

Multi-body dynamics in full-vehicle handling analysis:

This article presents transient handling analysis with a full-vehicle non-linear multi-body dynamic model, having 102 degrees of freedom. A transient cornering manoeuvre, with a constant steer angle and velocity has been undertaken. The effects of aerodynamic lift and drag forces have been included in the simulation tests. The vehicle handling characteristics with and without aerodynamic forces have been compared and various observations made. The aerodynamic forces have been predicted by a k-ϵ model solution of the Navier-Stokes equations for turbulent flow. The numerical predictions for the evaluation of aerodynamic lift coefficient agrees well with the scaled-down air tunnel experimental work, using hot-wire anemometry.
