Publisher Summary This chapter discusses rare earth compounds. The number of stable binary intermetallic compounds in which one of the components is a rare earth element is of the order of a thousand. Combination with elements of much smaller metallic radii then encompasses a much larger number of possible atomic arrangements of sufficiently high space filling than would be the case for two components of almost equal size. A meaningful study of the physical properties of intermetallic compounds can only be made on single phase materials. Only a fraction of the compounds is in single phase condition after the melting together of the components. The chapter explains the compounds with non-magnetic elements and compounds with d-transition metals. It also explains ternary compounds or hydrides.

Magnetization processes caused by iron substitution in cubic laves phases

This article describes the study, by nuclear magnetic resonance, of both static and dynamical aspects of the hyperfine interaction in rare earth metals, and illustrates the categories of information that can be obtained by using nuclei as microscopic probes in metallic media. The systems discussed include not only the pure rare earth metals but also their alloys and their metallic compounds with other elements. The behaviour of the hyperfine interaction in the various magnetic phases of these metals is discussed in terms of a simple microscopic model; particular attention is given to electrostatic effects and other features peculiar to the lanthanide metals. The influence of these features on the excitation and detection of nuclear resonance is also considered. Current trends in both spectroscopic and relaxation studies are identified, and areas of potential growth are indicated.

The contribution of Gd neighbours to the Gd hyperfine field in intermetallic compounds

Zero-field 139 La NMR spin echo spectra are reported for La incorporated into GdNi, GdNi 2 and GdNi 3 . Respective centre frequencies and structures of the La NMR lines in GdNi and GdNi 3 corroborate the systematics derived earlier, while for GdNi 2 they indicate the influence of Ni on the indirect interaction between Gd moments.

Does nickel contribute to magnetic ordering in GdNi2

The hyperfine interaction of holmium in the ferrimagnetic alloy system Ho0.03GdxY0.97-xCo2 has been studied by NMR at liquid helium temperatures. Well-resolved satellite spectra show that each gadolinium ion in a nearest-neighbour site contributes about 3T to the field at the holmium nucleus.
