Magnetically mediated hyperthermia: current status and future directions

TL;DR: Magnetic mediated hyperthermia (MMH) as discussed by the authors is a well-known treatment for cancer, which consists of the localization of magnetic particles or seeds within tumour tissue followed by exposure to an externally applied alternating magnetic field to cause them to heat.
Journal ArticleDOI

The effect of tumour size on ferromagnetic embolization hyperthermia in a rabbit liver tumour model.

TL;DR: For a given tumour iron concentration, larger tumours heat at a greater rate than small tumours, due to the poorer tissue cooling and better heat conduction in the necrotic regions of large tumours.
Journal ArticleDOI

Hepatic clearance of arterially infused ferromagnetic particles.

TL;DR: This study has shown that, although arterially infused ferromagnetic particles were extensively phagocytosed in the liver, there was no significant hepatic clearance 28 days after infusion, and it was determined that the suspension of 150 nm ferrom electromagnetic particles in lipiodol was too vaso-occlusive for use in hepatic tissue.

A system for the treatment of liver cancer by targeted hyperthermia using magnetic microspheres

TL;DR: A rabbit model of liver cancer is used to investigate different aspects of this new Sirtex technology, including the successful demonstration of tumour heating to therapeutic temperatures with minimal heating of the surrounding parenchyma and the consequent collapse of tumours growth.
