Selection of a convolution function for Fourier inversion using gridding (computerised tomography application)

In this paper, the results of computer simulations used to determine the domains of applicability of the first-order Born and Rytov approximations in diffraction tomography for cross-sectional (or three-dimensional) imaging of biosystems are shown. These computer simulations were conducted on single cylinders, since in this case analytical expressions are available for the exact scattered fields. The simulations establish the first-order Born approximation to be valid for objects where the product of the relative refractive index and the diameter of the cylinder is less than 0.35 lambda. The first-order Rytov approximation is valid with essentially no constraint on the size of the cylinders; however, the relative refractive index must be less than a few percent. We have also reviewed the assumptions made in the first-order Born and Rytov approximations for diffraction tomography. Further, we have reviewed the derivation of the Fourier Diffraction projection Theorem, which forms the basis of the first-order reconstruction algorithms. We then show how this derivation points to new FFT-based implementations for the higher order diffraction tomography algorithms that are currently being developed.

Limitations of Imaging with First-Order Diffraction Tomography

Coherent x-ray diffraction microscopy is a method of imaging nonperiodic isolated objects at resolutions limited, in principle, by only the wavelength and largest scattering angles recorded. We demonstrate x-ray diffraction imaging with high resolution in all three dimensions, as determined by a quantitative analysis of the reconstructed volume images. These images are retrieved from the three-dimensional diffraction data using no a priori knowledge about the shape or composition of the object, which has never before been demonstrated on a nonperiodic object. We also construct two-dimensional images of thick objects with greatly increased depth of focus (without loss of transverse spatial resolution). These methods can be used to image biological and materials science samples at high resolution with x-ray undulator radiation and establishes the techniques to be used in atomic-resolution ultrafast imaging at x-ray free-electron laser sources.

High-resolution ab initio three-dimensional x-ray diffraction microscopy

Frequency-domain methods are well suited to the imaging of wide-aperture cross-hole data. However, although the combination of the frequency domain with the wavenumber domain has facilitated the development of rapid algorithms, such as diffraction tomography, this has also required linearization with respect to homogeneous reference media. This restriction, and association restrictions on source-receiver geometries, are overcome by applying inverse techniques that operate in the frequency-space domain.

In order to incorporate the rigorous modelling technique of finite differences into the inverse procedure a nonlinear approach is used. To reduce computational costs the method of finite differences is applied directly to the frequency-domain wave equation. The use of high speed, high capacity vector computers allow the resultant finite-difference equations to be factored in-place. In this way wavefields can be computed for additional source positions at minimal extra cost, allowing inversions to be generated using data from a very large number of source positions.

Synthetic studies show that where weak scatter approximations are valid, diffraction tomography performs slightly better than a single iteration of non-linear inversion. However, if the background velocities increase systematically with depth, diffraction tomography is ineffective whereas non-linear inversion yields useful images from one frequency component of the data after a single iteration. Further synthetic studies indicate the efficacy of the method in the time-lapse monitoring of injection fluids in tertiary hydrocarbon recovery projects.

Inverse theory applied to multi‐source cross‐hole tomography.: part 1: acoustic wave‐equation method1

The Fourier inversion method for reconstruction of images in computerized tomography has not been widely used owing to the perceived difficulty of interpolating from polar or other measurement grids to the Cartesian grid required for fast numerical Fourier inversion. Although the Fourier inversion method is recognized as being computationally faster than the back-projection method for parallel ray projection data, the artifacts resulting from inaccurate interpolation have generally limited application of the method. This paper presents a computationally efficient gridding algorithm which can be used with direct Fourier transformation to achieve arbitrarily small artifact levels. The method has potential for application to other measurement geometries such as fan-beam projections and diffraction tomography and NMR imaging.

A Fast Sinc Function Gridding Algorithm for Fourier Inversion in Computer Tomography

From the standpoint of reporting a new contribution, this paper shows that by using bilinear interpolation followed by direct two-dimensional Fourier inversion, one can obtain reconstructions of quality which is comparable to that produced by the filtered-backpropagation algorithm proposed recently by Devaney. For an N × N image reconstructed from N diffracted projections, the former approach requires approximately 4N FFT's, whereas the backpropagation technique requires approximately N2FFT's. We have also taken this opportunity to present the reader with a tutorial introduction to diffraction tomography, an area that is becoming increasingly important not only in medical imaging, but also in underwater and seismic mapping with microwaves and sound. The main feature of the tutorial part is the statement of the Fourier diffraction projection theorem, which is an extension of the traditional Fourier slice theorem to the case of image formation with diffracting illumination.
