Annuelle, bienne oder perennierende Krauter, seltener Halbstraucher oder Straucher (z. B. Medicago arborea). Blatter fast stets trifoliolat und mit Stipulae, welche mit dem Blattstiel verwachsen sind. Bluten oft gehauft in kopfigen bis traubigen Blutenstanden. Stamina 10, von welchen 9 zu einer Rohre verwachsene Filamente haben (diadelphisches Androeceum); bei Ononis und Trigonella p. p. alle 10 Filamente eine Rohre bildend (monadelphisches Androeceum). Ovarien uni-multiovulat. Fruchte ein- bis mehrsamig, sehr verschieden gestaltet, dehiszent oder indehiszent. Samen meist mit Endosperm. Die Tribus hat Mannigfaltigkeitszentren im mediterranen Raum und in Zentralasien, und mit der Gattung Trifolium auch in Amerika. Mit Ausnahme von Trifolium sind die Trifolieen vollstandig auf die Alte Welt beschrankt und hier ebenfalls mit wenigen Arten in Australien und Sudafrika vertreten. Da die Genera Medicago, Melilotus, Trifolium und Trigonella zahlreiche wertvolle Futterpflanzen lieferten, sind einige zu Kulturpflanzen gewordene Arten gegenwartig weltweit verbreitet.
