The emergence of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) has fostered the development of advanced traveler information systems (ATIS). These systems are designed to assist travelers in making pre-trip and enroute travel choice decisions. It is contended that while many traveler information systems are innovative and make use of cutting edge technologies, they lack real machine intelligence and therefore may be limited in their ability to service the traveling public over the long-run. The purpose of this paper is to present a vision of the next generation traveler information system, termed Intelligent Traveler Information Systems (ITIS) in which artificial intelligence techniques are drawn upon to create systems capable of providing travelers with more personalized planning assistance.

Toward the design of intelligent traveler information systems

It is predicted that over the next 20 years, advanced driver information systems for North America will evolve through three stages: the information stage, the advisory stage, and the coordination stage. For each stage, the likely goals, vehicle equipment and infrastructure, expected benefits, research and development required, deployment issues, and obstacles and constraints are discussed. A series of operational field tests is defined for evaluating the systems at each stage. Standards are briefly discussed. >

Advanced driver information systems

Methods and systems are disclosed for providing customized content to users based on their location. In one embodiment, for each of one or more content providers, a customized content delivery function receives information from the content provider defining a number of geographic shapes selecting corresponding geographic areas. Preferably, each of the geographic shapes overlaps at least one other of the geographic shapes and is assigned an importance level. For each geographic shape, the content provider defines one or more tags for the geographic shape and assigns a weight to each of the one or more tags. Thereafter, when a request is received from a requestor, one or more content items are selected for delivery to the requestor based on the geographic shapes, the tags and corresponding weights for the geographic shapes, and the location of the requestor.

Customized content delivery through the use of arbitrary geographic shapes

This paper investigates the reliability of information on prevailing trip times on the links of a network as a basis for route choice decisions by individual drivers. It considers a type of information strategy in which no attempt is made by some central controller or coordinating entity to predict what the travel times on each link would be by the time it is reached by a driver that is presently at a given location. A specially modified model combining traffic simulation and path assignment capabilities is used to analyze the reliability of the real-time information supplied to the drivers. This is accomplished by comparing the supplied travel times (at the link and path levels) to the actual trip times experienced in the network after the information has been given. In addition, the quality of the decisions made by drivers on the basis of this information (under alternative path switching rules) is evaluated ex-post by comparing the actually experienced travel time (given the decision made) to the time that the driver would have experienced without the real-time information. Results of a series of simulation experiments under recurrent congestion conditions are discussed, illustrating the interactions between information reliability and user response.

An investigation of the reliability of real-time information for route choice decisions in a congested traffic system

The development of a road/automobile communication system is discussed. An inductive radio system and a microwave system are potential candidates. The inductive radio system has four lanes*4 m of communication range with a bit error rate characteristic of 5*10/sup -5/ to 5*10/sup -6/ and a maximum data volume of 460 kb attainable at a beacon when an automobile is traveling at 100 km/h. The microwave system using the 2.5 GHz frequency band has five lanes*60 m of communication range and a maximum data volume of 400 kb with a transmission data rate of 512 kbps. By deploying the phase shift keying/reverse amplitude modulation method, the system was able to determine the position of automobiles very accurately and to detect their direction of motion. The microwave system has very high potential for future applications and will be implemented in Japan. >

Development of mobile communication system for RACS

The development of Road/Automobile Communication System (RACS) has been studied and developed. Inductive radio system and Microwave system are potent candidates for RACS. Inductive radio system has 4 lane X 4 m of communication range with bit error rate characteristic of 5 X 0.00001 - 0.000006 and maximum data volume attainable at a beacon is 460 b when an automobile is traveling with the speed of 100 km/h. Microwave system using 2.5 GHz frequency band has 5 lane X 60 m of communication range and maximum data volume of 400 kb with transmission data rate of 512 kbps. By deploying PSK/Reverse Amplitude Modulation Method, the system attained the ability to determine the position of automobiles very accurately and to detect moving direction of automobiles. The microwave system has very high potential for future applications and will be implemented in Japan.
