Name service is a facility which provides user-friendly names for application processes. This helps us to refer application processes by names instead of addresses which are difficult to remember and use. In an OSI environment, the directory will be the logical place to hold the information required for providing name services. The various issues involved in providing name services using the directory are presented. The implementation and performance evaluation of such a name service are also described.

The X.500 directory provides a powerful mechanism for storing and retrieving information about objects of interest in the networking world. The rapid increase in the deployment of the directory has resulted in a very large amount of data in the global directory. Hence, the need arises for the development of a model which predicts the performance of the directory in an internet environment with large amount of data.
