The attitudes of the European Union (EU) citizens towards immigration and the impact of their national identification on attitudes towards the EU have received ample attention in the literature. However, the immigrants’ identification with Europe has not been adequately studied. This article investigates the impact of non-EU immigration heritage on European identification. Based on social identity theory and using Eurobarometer cross-sectional data, it compares the European identification of those with a first generation non-EU immigration heritage to that of EU country natives. Moreover, it focuses on salient aspects of immigrant experience such as country policies directed at reducing discrimination and personal experience of discrimination. Strategies of Resistance to Anti-Islamic Representations among Australian Muslim Women: An Intersectional Approach.

Past research demonstrates a marked tendency toward “acculturative conservatism,” whereby immigrants select given names for their children that are established—that is, popular in an earlier generation of the native population. Prior research has generally understood such conservatism as reflecting a lack of “mainstream” cultural capital; established names are popular among immigrants because they are unaware of current fashion. But we argue and show that even when they are aware of current fashion, immigrants may favor established names to affirm their membership in the host society. Comparing given names among World War II Jewish servicemen (born around 1918) with given names in the general US population in 1920, we show that the parents of these servicemen exhibited a pattern of acculturation that was (1) selective (in avoiding popular native names with strong Christian associations, and embracing certain unpopular native names) and (2) conservative (in their tendency to favor established names relative to newly popular names). In addition, our key finding is that these parents favored those established names whose popularity was rising and avoided those whose popularity was declining. This suggests that Jewish immigrants were aware of mainstream fashion, but deliberately chose established names so as to express their membership in American society. More generally, this result indicates that the acculturation process is as much about gaining social acceptance as about becoming adept in the mainstream culture.

Perceived Discrimination and Intergroup Behaviors: The Role of Muslim and American Identity Integration:

This article evaluates the psychological processes, discursive practices, and sociopolitical mechanisms underlying the identity reconstruction of Muslim immigrant women in the United States and the Netherlands. Specifically, it focuses on the ways in which Muslim immigrant women who are embedded in both Islamic and Western cultures negotiate their traditional and modern identities and self-representations and construct a coherent self-narrative about their bicultural existence as “Western-Muslim.” The qualitative evidence presented here expands existing theoretical and empirical discussions on biculturalism and acculturation by demonstrating the ways in which contextual factors define the negotiation repertoire that is available to bicultural individuals. The findings of this article also call into question some of the earlier findings on cultural conflict hypothesis, because it shows that successful negotiation of bicultural identities depends not so much on whether the individual perceives these identities and cultures to be compatible with each other, but rather on the availability of a coherent self-narrative of belonging to both cultural worlds.

Negotiating Multiple Identities, Constructing Western-Muslim Selves in the Netherlands and the United States

Learned helplessness is a psychological and cognitive process and state of mind when an individual remains unresponsive to new stimuli because of past experiences of (perceived) failure, which prevent subsequent learning. The state of learned helplessness could have an adverse effect on the employee productivity and could hinder adequately utilizing the human resources that are so critical to entities. It is shown that learned helplessness lies behind many problems such as unwillingness to work and perform operations or tasks as a matter of form; inability to engage in new and innovative thinking and practices; and incapability to go beyond routine works and operation. The objective of the present study is to identify factors that lead to learned helplessness among public sector employees. Specifically this article examines the relationship between the San Diego Municipal employees’ seniority level, position and demographic characteristics and their levels of learned helplessness. The survey results indicate that learned helplessness is correlated with the position, seniority, education and age of public sector employees; however gender was not correlated with helplessness. Learned Helplessness in Public Administration: The Case of San Diego City

This study surveyed 136 employees and volunteers from 21 nonprofit organizations in Southern California to assess the interaction of global mindset and leadership characteristics on workforce engagement. Global mindset refers to the capacity of being culturally aware, keeping an open mind toward ethnic differences, trends, and markets, while having the ability to observe cross-cultural commonalities. The study revealed that the exercise of follower-oriented behaviors manifested through servant and transformational leadership dimensions coupled with global mindset orientation had an important effect on the engagement levels of nonprofit volunteers and employees. Although we hypothesized that both follower-oriented dimensions would have a statistically significant positive mediational effect on workforce engagement in nonprofit organizations, our findings showed that the transformational leadership dimension actually had a suppressing effect on global mindset. This might be due to the universal applicability ascribed to transformational leadership (Bass 1997), which might have offset the potential additional effects of global mindset. On the other hand, the significant mediational positive effect of the servant dimensions led to reinforce Patterson, Dannhauser, and Stone’s argument (2007) about the merits of leadership based on global mindset and servant characteristics, such as altruism and humility, in order to increase workforce engagement among volunteers and employees in local nonprofit organizations.
