A prevalent and pervasive view of designing is that it can be modeled using variables and decisions made about what values should be taken by these variables. The activity of designing is carried out with the expectation that the designed artifact will operate in the natural world and the social world. These worlds impose constraints on the variables and their values; so, design could be described as a goal-oriented, constrained, decision- making activity. However, design distinguish- es itself from other similarly described activities not only by its domain but also by additional necessary features. Designing involves exploration, exploring what variables might be appropriate. The process of explo- ration involves both goal variables and deci- sion variables. In addition, designing involves learning: Part of the exploration activity is learning about emerging features as a design proceeds. Finally, design activity occurs within two contexts: the context within which the designer operates and the context produced by the developing design itself. The designer’s perception of what the context is affects the implication of the context on the design. The context shifts as the designer’s perceptions change. Design activity can be now characterized as a goal-oriented, con- strained, decision-making, exploration, and learning activity that operates within a con- text that depends on the designer’s percep- tion of the context.

A User’s Guide

One of the fundamental principles of the database approach is that a database allows a nonredundant, unified representation of all data managed in an organization. This is achieved only when methodologies are available to support integration across organizational and application boundaries.Methodologies for database design usually perform the design activity by separately producing several schemas, representing parts of the application, which are subsequently merged. Database schema integration is the activity of integrating the schemas of existing or proposed databases into a global, unified schema.The aim of the paper is to provide first a unifying framework for the problem of schema integration, then a comparative review of the work done thus far in this area. Such a framework, with the associated analysis of the existing approaches, provides a basis for identifying strengths and weaknesses of individual methodologies, as well as general guidelines for future improvements and extensions.

A comparative analysis of methodologies for database schema integration

The aim of information lifecycle management is to develop a cost-effective strategy for maintaining information assets, balancing the cost of maintaining information against business value. This paper contributes to development of theoretical information value based on a classification scheme that does not consider operational factors (e.g., storage, access). It concentrates on valuing information in terms of its type, organizational level and the extent of its effects. An information flow model provides the foundation for such categorisation.

Research efforts have been directed toward the improvement of privacy protecting technology by incorporating privacy protection into database systems. Purpose acts as a central concept on which access decisions are made. A complexity of purpose and users role hierarchies is utilized to manage the mapping between users and purposes. In this paper, we propose a personal information flow model that specifies a limited number of acts on this type of information. Chains of these acts can be used instead of the "intended/business purposes" used in privacy access control.

Beyond purpose-based privacy access control

One approach to developing service-oriented Web applications is to transform high-level business models to a composition language that implements business processes with Web services. Object-oriented analysis and design and UML-based diagrams are typically used in the software development process. In this paper, we propose using flow as a fundamental notion underlying understanding of activities in Web Services. We discuss the development of business processes through introduction of a conceptual model as a framework for design. We scrutinize current modeling used in transformation methodologies, and then introduce a flow-based conceptualization of services through case studies with a high-level business description.

Developing Web Applications

We describe a computer system for recognizing the printed Arabic text of multifonts. The system contains four components: acquisition, segmentation, character recognition and word recognition. The word recognition component includes two sub-systems: a morphological spelling checker/correcter, and a morphological word recognizer. With a 95·5% character recognition rate corresponding to an 81·58% word recognition rate, tests have resulted in an increase in the rate of word recognition by 6·97% using the proposed morphologically based method.

Machine recognition of printed Arabic text utilizing natural language morphology

Application development security utilizes a list of threats that identify and organize application security classes of attack. The developed system is decomposed into relevant components and then each component is analyzed for threats. Data flow diagrams (DFDs) are typically used to graphically represent a system. In this paper we propose a flow-based model as an alternative methodology for identification and classification of threats.
