We consider the problem of localizing multiple targets by millimeter wave (mmWave) radars with irregular antenna placement, i.e., trapezoid virtual antenna array. The goal is to estimate both the number of targets and their 3-D locations. While many well-known algorithms have been developed for either problems, they still suffer from several limitations, such as the need for a large amount of sampled radar data and high computation complexity. In this work, we develop an efficient solution by exploring the received signal structure in two steps: 1) estimating the number of targets and their ranges by extending Barone’s method to handle data from multiple antennas and 2) estimating the angle of arrival of each target by a Least-Square algorithm optimization. The proposed algorithm has been evaluated through Monte-Carlo simulations and an indoor testbed. By comparing with baseline algorithms, including 2D-FFT and multiple signal classification (MUSIC), we find that the proposed algorithm has the best performance in high signal-to-noise ratio regimes. 

Multiple-Target Localization by Millimeter-Wave Radars With Trapezoid Virtual Antenna Arrays

RADAR technology is getting significance place in estimation and detection of short and long range targets. One of the important estimation parameter is radar delay time. In this paper, Maximum Likelihood Estimator (MLE) for range estimation using static radar is derived. Range of radar is estimated by estimating the round trip delay time. Delay is observed from the active transmitted pulse of radar. In addition, the Cramer Rao Lower Bound (CRLB) for range is also calculated. Simulation of MLE is performed. Monte Carlo simulations are also done to show that MLE achieves the CRLB at high signal to noise ratio.

Range estimation in radar using maximum likelihood estimator

Code Division multiple access (CDMA) is a spread spectrum multiple access technique with the advantages of efficient bandwidth utilization, flexible cell planning and capacity. Although CDMA itself is 3rd generation scheme, some of its variants are expected to be used in conjunction with the upcoming 5th generation technologies to enhance the network capacity. In many simulation models, a single channel is used to transmit the composite CDMA signal. This model is not suitable for practical scenarios where each user's signal is passed through different channel undergoing various channel degradations. In this paper, a multiuser CDMA system model is proposed in which the data from each user passes through different channel prior to aggregation at the base station. The performance of the system is analyzed under various channel qualities. Depending upon the SNR, channels are categorized as Best, Medium and Worst. The performance of the system in terms of Bit Error Rate (BER) is investigated under several combinations of channel qualities. Both the orthogonal and nonorthogonal spreading codes are used for comparison under different channel qualities.
