Abstract: The vision-based coordinate measurement (VCM) automated measurement system has been under development at the National Research Council Canada for several years. The system, which is a multicamera passive system, combines the principles of stereo vision, photogrammetry, knowledge-based techniques, and object-oriented design to provide precise coordinate and dimension measurements of parts for applications such as those found in the aerospace and automobile industries. The system may also be used for tracking or positioning of parts and digitization of targeted objects. Description of the system, the techniques employed for calibration, CAD-based feature extraction and measurement, and performance evaluation are presented.© (1992) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering.
