‘Structure-from-Motion’ photogrammetry: A low-cost, effective tool for geoscience applications

We describe a hardware and software system for digitizing the shape and color of large fragile objects under non-laboratory conditions Our system employs laser triangulation rangefinders, laser time-of-flight rangefinders, digital still cameras, and a suite of software for acquiring, aligning, merging, and viewing scanned data As a demonstration of this system, we digitized 10 statues by Michelangelo, including the well-known figure of David, two building interiors, and all 1,163 extant fragments of the Forma Urbis Romae, a giant marble map of ancient Rome Our largest single dataset is of the David - 2 billion polygons and 7,000 color images In this paper, we discuss the challenges we faced in building this system, the solutions we employed, and the lessons we learned We focus in particular on the unusual design of our laser triangulation scanner and on the algorithms and software we developed for handling very large scanned models

Building Information Modeling (BIM) for existing buildings — Literature review and future needs

An image guided catheter navigation system for navigating a region of a patient includes an imaging device, a tracking device, a controller, and a display. The imaging device generates images of the region of the patient. The tracking device tracks the location of the catheter in the region of the patient. The controller superimposes an icon representing the catheter onto the images generated from the imaging device based upon the location of the catheter. The display displays the image of the region with the catheter superimposed onto the image at the current location of the catheter.

Navigation system for cardiac therapies

This paper presents a general vision-based coordinate measurement system, its planned use within a sheet metal inspection application, the expected benefits accrued from the use of an object-oriented design strategy, and the utilization of the methodology as it applies to the redesign of the vision system. Adherence to an object-oriented design strategy will obviate a number of shortcomings present in the original system implementation. System improvements include: a more lucid and intuitive user interface; greater accuracy and reliability through the use of decentralized modules; simplification of the description of the interrelationship between the perceived and actual dimensions of parts being inspected; and, easier porting of the general vision system to specific applications.© (1991) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering. Experimental analysis and design considerations of virtual environments creation

A highly accurate stereo vision has been developed, at the National Research Council of Canada, as part of an on-machine dimensional inspection system. The approach is designed to eliminate or minimize the well-known difficulties of stereo vision. Its main features, besides the potentially high accuracy, are the flexibility, cost effectiveness and speed.

A Stereo Vision System For On-Machine Dimensional Metrology

This paper presents the 3D modelling work that was accomplished in preparing a multimedia CDROM about the history of a Byzantine Crypt. An effective approach based upon high-resolution photo-realistic texture mapping onto 3D models generated from range images is used to present the spatial information about the Crypt. Usually, this information is presented as 2D images that are flat and don’t show the three-dimensionality of an environment. Both a CDROM and a video animation have been created for this project.
