Data-driven Soft Sensors in the process industry

Traditional robots have rigid underlying structures that limit their ability to interact with their environment. For example, conventional robot manipulators have rigid links and can manipulate objects using only their specialised end effectors. These robots often encounter difficulties operating in unstructured and highly congested environments. A variety of animals and plants exhibit complex movement with soft structures devoid of rigid components. Muscular hydrostats e.g. octopus arms and elephant trunks are almost entirely composed of muscle and connective tissue and plant cells can change shape when pressurised by osmosis. Researchers have been inspired by biology to design and build soft robots. With a soft structure and redundant degrees of freedom, these robots can be used for delicate tasks in cluttered and/or unstructured environments. This paper discusses the novel capabilities of soft robots, describes examples from nature that provide biological inspiration, surveys the state of the art and outlines existing challenges in soft robot design, modelling, fabrication and control.

Ionic Polymer Polymer Composites (IP2Cs) are emerging materials used to realize motion actuators and sensors In the former case a voltage input is able to cause the membrane to bend while in the latter case by bending an IP2C membrane, a voltage output is obtained In this paper authors introduce a software tool able to estimate the dynamic behaviour for sensors based on IP2Cs working in air In the proposed tool, geometrical quantities that rule the sensing properties of IP2C-based transducers are taken into account together with their dynamic characteristics A graphical interface (GUI) has been developed in order to give a useful tool that allows the user to understand the behaviour and the role of the parameters involved in the transduction phenomena The tool is based on the idea that a graphical user interface will allow persons not skilled in IP2C materials to observe their behaviour and to analyze their characteristics This could greatly increase the interest of researchers towards this new class of transducers; moreover, it can support the educational activity of students involved in advanced academical courses

It is well known that several classes of systems (biological, geophysical, electronic) show interesting features when a suitable level of noise is either forced into or naturally present in their working environment, For example, this phenomenon has been used to improve the performance of some sensing devices. The main problem in dealing with noise-added systems is the identification of the relationship between the optimal level of noise to be forced into the system and the system parameters. In previous work the authors suggested both analytical and experimental solutions to the problem of optimal noise level tuning in stochastic systems. In particular an experimental device allowing optimal system performance has been tested. In this paper a different working condition is investigated and a new nonlinear form of the noise tuning law is proposed.
