Data-driven Soft Sensors in the process industry

Traditional robots have rigid underlying structures that limit their ability to interact with their environment. For example, conventional robot manipulators have rigid links and can manipulate objects using only their specialised end effectors. These robots often encounter difficulties operating in unstructured and highly congested environments. A variety of animals and plants exhibit complex movement with soft structures devoid of rigid components. Muscular hydrostats e.g. octopus arms and elephant trunks are almost entirely composed of muscle and connective tissue and plant cells can change shape when pressurised by osmosis. Researchers have been inspired by biology to design and build soft robots. With a soft structure and redundant degrees of freedom, these robots can be used for delicate tasks in cluttered and/or unstructured environments. This paper discusses the novel capabilities of soft robots, describes examples from nature that provide biological inspiration, surveys the state of the art and outlines existing challenges in soft robot design, modelling, fabrication and control.

Fractional Order Systems: Modeling and Control Applications

In this paper, the study of a constant phase element is presented. The device is realized by Bacterial Cellulose imbibed with Ionic Liquids. In particular, the realized device is investigated in a wide interval of time, with constant nominal working conditions. The authors demonstrate the fractional nature of the device in a very large frequency range. An Equivalent Electric Circuit Model is provided, giving evidence of its fractional-order nature.

Investigation of Bacterial Cellulose-based Fractional Order Element behaviour

We are glad to publish, in this issue of the Instrumentation & Measurement Magazine (IMM) a collection of contributions from an initiative between the Magazine and the Video Tutorial program of the Instrumentation and Measurement Society. The initiative is named “Read our Videos-Watch our Papers,” and it aims at collecting contributions from speakers who already recorded Video Tutorials for the Society. The video collection can be found at https://ieee-ims.org/vtprogram, where about thirty videos have been collected so far. The papers published in this issue are twins to some videos we have in the I&M collection. We believe that this is a valuable oppportunity to improve the impact of both the videos and the corresponding papers. The action is intended to work both ways, and papers published in this issue are the first group of contributions we have collected so far. I do thank the authors for collaborating in this effort. The initiative has not concluded, of course, and I hope that both the videos and number of papers will grow in the near future. We encourage interested authors to propose videos to the Video Tutotial Progam and corresponding papers to the IMM, so that we can consider the contribution as part of the initative.
