TL;DR: The study of the smECTic-A to chiral smectic-C(*) phase transition of the liquid crystal S-(+)-[4-(2(')-methyl butyl) phenyl 4(')-n-octylbiphenyl-4-carboxylate] (CE8) containing dispersed hydrophilic aerosils reveals novel properties, important to understanding quenched disorder and confinement in ferroelectric liquid crystals.
Abstract: The study of the smectic-A to chiral smectic-C(*) phase transition of the liquid crystal S-(+)-[4-(2(')-methyl butyl) phenyl 4(')-n-octylbiphenyl-4-carboxylate] (CE8) containing dispersed hydrophilic aerosils reveals novel properties, important to understanding quenched disorder and confinement in ferroelectric liquid crystals. Smectic layer compression leads to a distribution of transition temperatures inducing smearing of the macroscopic data across the transition. A pronounced confinement-induced pretransitional tilted order is observed.

TL;DR: A theory for surface modes at the nematic-isotropic interface in thermotropic nematogen-non-nematogen mixtures is developed, using the dynamical generalization of the Landau-de Gennes model for the orientational (nonconserved) order parameter, coupled with the Cahn-Hilliard equation for concentration (conserved parameter).
Abstract: We develop a theory for surface modes at the nematic-isotropic interface in thermotropic nematogen--non-nematogen mixtures. We employ the dynamical generalization of the Landau--de Gennes model for the orientational (nonconserved) order parameter, coupled with the Cahn-Hilliard equation for concentration (conserved parameter), and include hydrodynamic degrees of freedom. The theory uses a generalized form of the Landau--de Gennes free-energy density to include the coupling between the concentration of the non-nematogen fluid and the orientational order parameter. Two representative phase diagrams are shown. The method of matched asymptotic expansions is used to obtain a generalized dispersion relation. Further analysis is made in particular cases. Orientational order parameter relaxation dominates in the short-wavelength limit, while in the long-wavelength limit viscous damping processes become important. There is an intermediate region (depending on the temperature) in which the interaction between conserved parameter dynamics and hydrodynamics is important.

TL;DR: The threshold field for which the PSSF precedes the ASF transition is determined, as well as the structure of the destabilizing mode, to determine the existence of a periodic saddle-splay Freedericksz (PSSF) transition.
Abstract: By use of a local stability criterion recently introduced, we predict the existence of a periodic saddle-splay Freedericksz (PSSF) transition that adds to the existing class of classical Freedericksz transitions driven in a nematic cell by an external field. Occurrence of the PSSF transition requires a saddle-splay elastic constant with a large enough magnitude and different anchoring strengths at the plates confining the nematic cell. Otherwise, either the PSSF transition does not occur at all, or it requires a field higher than that associated with the classical aperiodic splay Freedericksz (ASF) transition, in which case it is not observable. Here, we determine the threshold field for which the PSSF precedes the ASF transition, as well as the structure of the destabilizing mode.

TL;DR: A comparative study of the influence of a random anisotropy field on continuous and discontinuous phase transitions of the ordered phase and of the hydrodynamic field to the imposed disorder.
Abstract: We carry out a comparative study of the influence of a random anisotropy field on continuous and discontinuous phase transitions. The ordered phase, which is reached via a continuous symmetry breaking phase transition, is characterized by an order parameter and by a corresponding hydrodynamic continuum field. We assume that the response of the hydrodynamic field to the imposed disorder results in a domainlike pattern of the system. For a strong enough disorder both transitions become gradual. For weaker disorder strengths the disorder converts a second order transition into a discontinuous one.

TL;DR: In this article, the temperature evolution of smectic ordering of 8CB liquid crystal confined to various CPG matrices was studied and substantial pretransitional anchoring was also observed, particularly in the silane-treated samples.
Abstract: We study the temperature evolution of smectic ordering of 8CB liquid crystal confined to various CPG matrices. The characteristic diameters of matrices ranged from 24 nm to 128 nm. The CPG voids were either left non-treated or were treated with silane. A weakly 1st order N-SmA transition in bulk 8CB, which could be attributed to the Halperin-Lubensky-Ma (HLM) effect, is broadened in confined samples. In confined samples substantial pretransitional anchoring was also observed, particularly in the silane-treated samples.
