In order to determine the type of instruction children need, it is important first to consider what is actually involved in the process of reading and comprehending text. Such basic information provides clear pointers to what children need to be taught. An understanding of what is involved in reading also helps to identify possible causes for a child's reading difficulties (see Chapter 3).

Reading and Critical Thinking Techniques on Understanding Reading Skills for Early Grade Students in Elementary School.

Various studies on teaching and learning reading in Indonesia have been conducted. In order to know the strengths and the weaknesses of the studies, a thorough study is needed to be conducted. This article is based on a critical analysis on teaching and learning reading in Indonesia for a study “a Case Study on Two Indonesian Learners’ Extensive Reading in English Experiences towards Developing Reading Competency”.  It aimed to answer: (1) What were the strengths and the weaknesses of the studies on teaching and learning reading in 2003 to 2013? (2) How were the studies similar and/ or different from the current study”? The critical analysis was conducted by studying twenty articles from 2003 until 2013. The studies were analyzed critically in terms of the strengths and the weaknesses. The findings of the analysis are;  (1) The strengths of the studies on teaching and learning reading in 2003 to 2013 were in terms of the topic of the studies indicating that learning English in Indonesian context and the studies on extensive reading were developed gradually. The weaknesses were in terms of the focus of   extensive reading and the variation of the research design. (2) The studies were similar with the current study in terms of the concept of extensive reading and the research design. This condition might be considered as an opportunity for the following researchers to conduct a research about learners’ experiences on extensive reading. It is suggested that that teachers, lecturers and the policy makers on language learning concern about how extensive reading is implemented.

An Analysis of Studies on Teaching and Learning Reading in Indonesia

Teaching of reading in elementary schools

This study aims at discovering whether or not there is any differences of students' reading comprehension skills for: (1) those who take learning model DRTA, PQRST, and DRA models, (2) those  who have high, moderate, and low interest in reading,  and whether (3) there is any interaction of learning models and reading interest toward reading comprehension skills. This study was conducted at the Junior High School Ternate. The number of samples is 79 people. The results of this study found that: First, there is a difference between the reading comprehension skills of students who take learning model DRTA, PQRST, and model DRA. Model DRTA yield better result compared with the DRA model and PQRST model. Secondly, there are differences in reading comprehension skills of students who have  high, moderate, and low reading interest. Students who have  high reading interest  show   better understanding than students who have moderate and low  reading interest. Third, there is an  interaction of learning models and reading interest toward reading comprehension skills Keywords: reading comprehension, modeling, reading interest.

The Effect of Learning Model Drta ( Directed Reading Thingking Activity ) Toward Students' Reading Comprehension Ability Seeing from Their Reading Interest

The research aims to explain the development of literacy programs in school libraries in Indonesia. This research is field research with a phenomenological approach with research locations in 10 junior high school libraries in Indonesia. Data collection is carried out using interviews, observations and documentation. Data analysis with reduction, classification, and verification. The results of this study found that the development of literacy programs in school libraries was carried out through habituation and learning activities. Habituation activities are carried out by inviting students to carry out literacy activities based on writing, religion, digital, reading angles, literacy ambassadors, reading challenges, and awarding. While learning activities are carried out by holding a class literacy club, mandatory visits to the library, and procuring class making. Article History Received: 18-04-2022

Development of Literacy Programs for Students in School Libraries in Indonesia

The effect of parents’education toward student s’ achievement serves  as the focus of this research since  there is a contradictory fact found in the field stating  that educational success is determined by several factors,  one of which is   parents. Parents’ education is the first and primary education for children to achieve life goals. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of parents’ education toward students’ achievement." This study was conducted at State Junior High School  (SMP Negeri) 4 District Kayoa involving 83 students and 73 parents. The  data of this study included the data about  parents’ education level and the data of students’   achievement which were analyzed by using percentage technique. The results showed that 1) the education level of parents of students of SMP Negeri 4 Keecamatan Kayoa was generally still low. 2) the level of parents education has a very close relationship with student achievement. The Effect of Parents' Education toward Students' Achievement

This study starts  from a concern related to the  phenomena of  inter ethnic disharmony    , religion and culture in State Senior High School 1 ternate . In order to avoid that , it is necessary to implement the  awareness of the values ??of multicultural education   to create a  social order which is  harmonious , peaceful , and away from the conflict . This study is expected to provide an alternative foundation for the creation of harmonious social relations among ethnics.  The school as an institution  which  accommodates a wide variety of individuals with diverse social backgrounds will also give birth to the attitude and actions of different individuals . This condition can not be denied as we  are always exposed to the diversity of circumstances that are not harmonious and uncertain . Therefore,   to go to an orderly social system there is a need to  civilize the difference  owned by any person or any group member. This study uses a qualitative approach with naturalistic method . The sources of data and information were obtained through observation, in-depth interviews and  documentation .The result of the study indicates that : ( 1 ) the attitude of learners and teachers and school communities in State Senior High School 1 ternate does not show strong sectarian fanaticism , tribes and languages ??, (2 ) the behavior shown reflect learners in different ethnic religious harmony yet because there is still a relatively good stereotypical attitudes influence the dominant culture that exalts the local level and ( 3 ) there is a need to implement the constraint values ??of multicultural education   namely ( a) the teacher and the students do not yet have sufficient understanding and insight about anti religious and ethnic discrimination in schools , ( b ) there is no creation of a teacher or figure models who provide exemplary learners based on the values ??of multicultural education .
