Journal ArticleDOI
Age of transfused blood: an independent predictor of mortality despite universal leukoreduction.
Jordan A. Weinberg,Gerald McGwin,Russell Griffin,Vu Q. Huynh,Samuel A. Cherry,Marisa B. Marques,Donald A. Reiff,Jeffrey D. Kerby,Loring W. Rue +8 more
TL;DR: Although larger volumes of blood, irrespective of age, are associated with increased odds of mortality, the transfusion of blood stored beyond 2 weeks appears to potentiate this association despite a practice of universal leukoreduction.
Journal ArticleDOI
Transfusions in the less severely injured: does age of transfused blood affect outcomes?
Jordan A. Weinberg,Gerald McGwin,Marisa B. Marques,Samuel A. Cherry,Donald A. Reiff,Jeffrey D. Kerby,Loring W. Rue +6 more
TL;DR: In a mild to moderately injured intensive care unit patient cohort, the receipt of blood stored beyond 2 weeks was independently associated with mortality, renal failure, and pneumonia, suggesting the deleterious effect of older blood on patient outcome does not appear to be limited to the severely injured.
