Information-centric networking (ICN) has been proposed as one of the future Internet architectures. It is poised to address the challenges faced by today’s Internet that include, but not limited to, scalability, addressing, security, and privacy. Furthermore, it also aims at meeting the requirements for new emerging Internet applications. To realize ICN, named data networking (NDN) is one of the recent implementations of ICN that provides a suitable communication approach due to its clean slate design and simple communication model. There are a plethora of applications realized through ICN in different domains where data is the focal point of communication. One such domain is intelligent transportation system realized through vehicular ad hoc network (VANET) where vehicles exchange information and content with each other and with the infrastructure. Up to date, excellent research results have been yielded in the VANET domain aiming at safe, reliable, and infotainment-rich driving experience. However, due to the dynamic topologies, host-centric model, and ephemeral nature of vehicular communication, various challenges are faced by VANET that hinder the realization of successful vehicular networks and adversely affect the data dissemination, content delivery, and user experiences. To fill these gaps, NDN has been extensively used as underlying communication paradigm for VANET. Inspired by the extensive research results in NDN-based VANET, in this paper, we provide a detailed and systematic review of NDN-driven VANET. More precisely, we investigate the role of NDN in VANET and discuss the feasibility of NDN architecture in VANET environment. Subsequently, we cover in detail, NDN-based naming, routing and forwarding, caching, mobility, and security mechanism for VANET. Furthermore, we discuss the existing standards, solutions, and simulation tools used in NDN-based VANET. Finally, we also identify open challenges and issues faced by NDN-driven VANET and highlight future research directions that should be addressed by the research community.

Named Data Networking in Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks: State-of-the-Art and Challenges

Cooperative Intelligent Transportation Systems, mainly represented by vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs), are among the key components contributing to the Smart City and Smart World paradigms. Based on the continuous exchange of both periodic and event triggered messages, smart vehicles can enhance road safety, while also providing support for comfort applications. In addition to the different communication protocols, securing such communications and establishing a certain trustiness among vehicles are among the main challenges to address, since the presence of dishonest peers can lead to unwanted situations. To this end, existing security solutions are typically divided into two main categories, cryptography and trust, where trust appeared as a complement to cryptography on some specific adversary models and environments where the latter was not enough to mitigate all possible attacks. In this paper, we provide an adversary-oriented survey of the existing trust models for VANETs. We also show when trust is preferable to cryptography, and the opposite. In addition, we show how trust models are usually evaluated in VANET contexts, and finally, we point out some critical scenarios that existing trust models cannot handle, together with some possible solutions.

Trust Management for Vehicular Networks: An Adversary-Oriented Overview

Vehicular Ad hoc Networks (VANETs) as a subset of mobile ad hoc networks which allow communication between any vehicle with other adjacent vehicles, road side units and infrastructure. In these networks, the purpose is to enhance the security, improve the management of urban and road traffic and provide services to the passenger. Due to problems such as reliability and privacy, messages that are exchanged in the network should be confidential and secure. Therefore, we need a secure topology to maintain trust, which enables the cryptographic process. In this paper, a trust based authentication method for clustered vehicular ad hoc networks is proposed. The efficient authentication method should be able to accurately detect malicious nodes and reduced delay and overhead. The main purpose of the proposed method is to create trustworthy and stable clusters that lead to the stability of the entire network. For this purpose, we estimate the trust degree of each vehicle by combining the trust between vehicles and the trust between the vehicle and Road Side Units (RSUs), and Cluster Heads (CHs) are selected based on this estimated trust degree. Cluster Heads along with verifiers are responsible for monitoring each vehicle. On the other hand, the cluster heads provide an optimal and secure route for transmitting messages. Messages are digitally signed by the sender and encrypted using a public/private key as distributed by a Trusted Authority (TA) and decrypted by the destination; so that each message contains a certificate from a trusted authority. In this identification, the sender and receiver of the message are verified and authentication will be achieved. By simulation results, it is proves that the proposed method increases the accuracy in detecting malicious nodes and the packet delivery ratio, and decreases the delay of authentication and overhead.

A trust infrastructure based authentication method for clustered vehicular ad hoc networks

The TCP/IP stack plays an important role in terms of data transmission, traffic control and address assignment in the Internet of Vehicles (IoV), which has seen phenomenal growth in recent years. However, with the increasing technical requirements and daily demand in IoV, the drawbacks of traditional TCP/IP protocols, e.g., weak scalability in large networks, low efficiency in the dense environment and unreliable addressing in high mobility circumstance, become non-trivial especially in vehicular environments. Fortunately, the emerging Named Data Networking (NDN) technology provides a good choice to address the above issues in vehicular environments. Specifically, the introduced content store module in NDN which caches the sent/received contents, can greatly improve the networking performance by suppressing redundancy as well as enriching diversity. With aforementioned motivations, we thoroughly studied previous works on Vehicular Named Data Networking (VNDN) with emphasis on content caching, and then demonstrate the feasibility and necessity for employing NDN in vehicular environments with the help of content caching. Subsequently, we further strengthened the importance of cache selection and replacement strategies in VNDN framework, which is positioned to meet the challenges of data transmission efficiency and resource consumption by leveraging in-network vehicular caching. After that, we engaged in an in-depth survey on the existing cache selection and replacement schemes in VNDN, with their applicability compared. Next, further challenges during caching design were elaborately analyzed considering the specific characteristics of VNDN. Finally, we highlighted the potential research directions which may shine lights on the promising efforts to improve the performance of VNDN content caching.

In VANETS transmission links are at the risk of disconnection. Thus the development of the efficient routing mechanism is needed in VANETS. It is observed in literature survey that the AODV-R outperforms all other related protocols. But still issues related to congestion control needs to be addressed. This paper proposes a Ant Colony Optimization based AODV-R protocol for better data aggregation and route selection. The proposed methodology has shown quite significant improvement over available ones.
