Effects of sampling regime on the mean and variance of home range size estimates
Luca Börger,Luca Börger,Luca Börger,Novella Franconi,Giampiero De Michele,Alberto Gantz,Fiora Meschi,Andrea Manica,Sandro Lovari,Tim Coulson +9 more
TL;DR: A new procedure, based on a variance components analysis using generalized mixed effects models, is proposed, which concludes that effort should be directed at marking more individuals monitored over long periods at the expense of the sampling rate per individual.
Journal ArticleDOI
A review of wolf predation in southern Europe: does the wolf prefer wild prey to livestock?
Alberto Meriggi,Sandro Lovari +1 more
TL;DR: This synthesis of 15 studies, published in the last 15 years, on food habits of the wolf in southern Europe, has shown that ungulates have been the main diet component overall and a significant inverse correlation was found between the occurrence of wild and domestic ungulate in the diet.
Journal ArticleDOI
Species inflation and taxonomic artefacts—A critical comment on recent trends in mammalian classification
Frank E. Zachos,Marco Apollonio,Eva V. Bärmann,Marco Festa-Bianchet,Ursula B. Göhlich,Jan Christian Habel,Elisabeth Haring,Elisabeth Haring,Luise Kruckenhauser,Sandro Lovari,Allan D. McDevitt,Cino Pertoldi,Gertrud E. Rössner,Marcelo R. Sánchez-Villagra,Massimo Scandura,Franz Suchentrunk +15 more
TL;DR: This work highlights several cases of splitting and argues that much of this taxonomic inflation is artificial due to shortcomings of the phylogenetic species concept and unjustified reliance on insufficient morphological and/or genetic data.
Journal ArticleDOI
Social behaviour of the calves of semi-wild Maremma cattle, Bos primigenius taurus
TL;DR: The social behaviour of semi-wild free-ranging Maremma calves, Bos primigenius taurus, was observed daily in their first 2 months from birth at the estate La Trappola (Ponticelli Reserve), 10 Km south-west of Grosseto, Tuscany, Italy.
Journal ArticleDOI
A habitat model for brown bear conservation and land use planning in the central Apennines
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the brown bear habitat suitability in an 8000 km 2 study area encompassing Abruzzo, Latium, and Molise regions in central-southern Italy.
