High-speed turbulent flows with shock waves are characterized by high localized surface heat transfer rates. Computational predictions are often inaccurate due to the limitations in modelling of the unclosed turbulent energy flux in the highly non-equilibrium regions of shock interaction. In this paper, we investigate the turbulent energy flux generated when homogeneous isotropic turbulence passes through a nominally normal shock wave. We use linear interaction analysis where the incoming turbulence is idealized as being composed of a collection of two-dimensional planar vorticity waves, and the shock wave is taken to be a discontinuity. The nature of the postshock turbulent energy flux is predicted to be strongly dependent on the angle of incidence of the incoming waves. The energy flux correlation is also decomposed into its vortical, entropy and acoustic contributions to understand its rapid non-monotonic variation behind the shock. Three-dimensional statistics, calculated by integrating two-dimensional results over a prescribed upstream energy spectrum, are compared with available data from direct numerical simulations. A detailed budget of the governing equation is also considered in order to gain insight into the underlying physics.

Turbulent energy flux generated by shock/homogeneous-turbulence interaction

Shock–turbulence interactions are investigated using well-resolved direct numerical simulations (DNS) and analysis at a range of Reynolds, mean and turbulent Mach numbers (, for weak and strong turbulence, respectively. Effect of anisotropy in the incoming flow is also assessed by utilizing two different forcing mechanisms to generate turbulence.

Shock-turbulence interactions at high turbulence intensities

The interaction of turbulence and shock waves is considered self-consistently so that the back-reaction of the turbulence and its associated reaction on the turbulence is addressed. This approach differs from previous studies which considered the interaction of linear modes with a shock. The most basic model of hypersonic flow, described by the inviscid form of Burgers’ equation, is used. An energy-containing model which couples the turbulent energy density and correlation length of the flow with the mean flow is developed. Upstream turbulence interacting with a shock wave is found to mediate the shock by (1) increasing the mean shock speed, and (2) decreasing the efficiency of turbulence amplification at the shock as the upstream turbulence energy density is increased. The interaction of turbulence with shock waves: a basic model

This thesis is mainly dedicated to the simulation of massively separated flows in the space domain. We restricted our study to afterbody flows, where the separation is imposed by abrupt geometry changes. In the space domain, highly compressible flows require the use of robust numerical schemes. On the other hand, the simulation of turbulence imposes high-order low dissipative numerical schemes. These two specifications, apparently contradictory, must coexist within the same simulation. The coupling between turbulence models and discretization schemes is of the utmost importance and must be considered. Numerical schemes should keep their formal accuracy on complex geometries and on very irregular meshes imposed by the industrial context. In this research, we analyze the discretization scheme implemented in the FLUSEPA solver, developed by Airbus Defence & Space. Such a scheme is robust and accurate for flows with shocks and exhibits a low sensitivity to the grid (the third order of accuracy being ensured, even on highly irregular grids). Unfortunately, the scheme possesses a too low resolvability related to a too high numerical dissipation for RANS/LES simulations. To circumvent this problem, we considered a conditional and local re-centering strategy: in regions dominated by vortical structures, an analytic function provides local re-centering when a numerical stability condition is satisfied. This stability condition ensures the coupling between the numerical scheme and the model. In this way, only the turbulent and the laminar viscosities play a role in regions dominated by vorticity, and also allow to stabilize the numerical scheme. This study provides also a qualitative and quantitative assessment of several hybrid RANS/LES models, using the same grids and discretization scheme. For this purpose some recent improvements (improving their ability to trigger the Kelvin-Helmohlotz instabilities without delay), proposed in the litterature or suggested in this work, are taken into account. Numerical applications include geometrical configurations ranging from a backward facing step to realistic launcher configurations.

Self adaptive turbulence models for unsteady compressible flows Modèles de turbulence auto-adaptatifs pour la simulation des écoulements compressibles instationnaires

Abstract A direct numerical simulation is performed for a supersonic turbulent boundary layer interacting with a compression/expansion ramp at an angle $\alpha =24^{\circ }$, matching the same operating conditions of the direct numerical simulation by Priebe & Martín (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 699, 2012, pp. 1–49). The adopted numerical method relies on the high-order spectral difference scheme coupled with a bulk-based, low-dissipative, artificial viscosity for shock-capturing purposes (Tonicello et al., Comput. Fluids, vol. 197, 2020, 104357). Filtered and averaged fields are evaluated to study total kinetic energy transfers in the presence of non-negligible compressibility effects. The compression motions are shown to promote forward transfer of kinetic energy down the energy cascade, whereas expansion regions are more likely to experience backscatter of kinetic energy. A standard decomposition of the subgrid scale tensor in deviatoric and spherical parts is proposed to study the compressible and incompressible contributions in the total kinetic energy transfers across scales. On average, the correlation between subgrid scale dissipation and large-scale dilatation is shown to be caused entirely by the spherical part of the Reynolds stresses (i.e. the turbulent kinetic energy). On the other hand, subtracting the spherical contribution, a mild correlation is still noticeable in the filtered fields. For compressible flows, it seems reasonable to assume that the eddy-viscosity approximation can be a suitable model for the deviatoric part of the subgrid scale tensor, which is exclusively causing forward kinetic energy cascade on average. Instead, more complex models are likely to be needed for the spherical part, which, even in statistical average, provides an important mechanism for backscatter.

Turbulence kinetic energy transfers in direct numerical simulation of shock-wave–turbulence interaction in a compression/expansion ramp

Moore's (1954) inviscid linear analysis of the interaction of a shock wave with a plane acoustic wave is evaluated by comparison to computation. The analysis is then extended to study the interaction of an isotropic field of acoustic waves with a normal shock wave. The evolution of fluctuating kinetic energy, sound level and thermodynamic fluctuations across the shock wave are examined in detail. The interaction of acoustic fluctuations with the shock is notably different from that of vortical fluctuations. The kinetic energy of the acoustic fluctuations decreases across the shock wave for Mach numbers between 1.25 and 1.8. For Mach numbers exceeding 3, the kinetic energy amplifies by levels that significantly exceed those found in the interaction of vortical fluctuations with the shock. Upon interacting with the shock wave, the acoustic waves generate vortical fluctuations whose contribution to the far-field kinetic energy increases with increasing Mach number. The level of sound increases across the shock wave. The rise in the sound pressure level across the shock varies from 5 to 20 dB for Mach number varying from 1.5 to 5. The fluctuations behind the shock wave are nearly isentropic for Mach number less than 1.5, beyond which the generation of entropy fluctuations becomes significant.
