Rational design of Sr2Fe1.5Mo0.4Y0.1O6-δ oxygen electrode with triple conduction for hydrogen production in protonic ceramic electrolysis cell

In this work, Eu3+-doped SnO2 nanoparticles are prepared and embedded into MXene (Ti3C2) laminates, and Ti3C2@Eu-SnO2 composites are obtained. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) characterization show that the composites have excellent electrochemical properties and unique morphology. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR) results of lactate oxidase (Lox) immobilized on Ti3C2@Eu-SnO2 indicate that Eu-SnO2, Ti3C2, and Lox have a good hybrid coordination and biocompatibility. The enzymatic electrochemical biosensor constructed with Ti3C2@Eu-SnO2/Lox on glassy carbon electrode (GCE) reveals an excellent linear relationship in the lactate concentration ranging from 1.0×10−9 to 1.0×10−4 mol L−1. It has a low detection limit of 3.38×10−10 mol L−1 and high sensitivity of 4.815 mA nmol−1 L cm−2. Furthermore, the fabricated biosensor has a reasonable recovery rate for determining lactate in human serum.

A significant hydration and protonic conduction in La2NiO4+δ‐based Ruddlesden–Popper (RP) oxides will enable their use as positrode materials in proton ceramic electrochemical cells (PCECs). Unlike perovskite electrolytes and positrode materials, where protons reside and jump on regular oxide ions, RP oxides such as La2NiO4+δ may contain oxygen interstitials and offer the possibility that protons locate on and migrate by help of these, suggesting a mechanism by which positrodes may operate by triple conduction. Here, theoretical calculations that support proton migration between interstitial oxide ions in the rock‐salt layer via unshared oxide ions in the perovskite layer are reported. Furthermore, water contents of pristine La2NiO4+δ and La2‐xAxNiO4+δ (A = Ca, Sr, Ba) are reported, showing that hydration increases with the level and basicity of the dopant. Hebb‐Wagner blocking electrode measurements show significant partial protonic conductivity in all samples. The effects of doping on hydration and of pH2O on the p‐type conductivity suggest that protons reside primarily on structural oxide ion, but a role of interstitial oxide ions for dissolution and migration of protons cannot be ruled out in cases with oxygen excess. The results are instructive for further studies and optimization of RP oxides as potential positrode materials for PCECs.

Progress in 3D-MXene Electrodes for Lithium/Sodium/Potassium/Magnesium/Zinc/Aluminum-Ion Batteries

Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are an attractive type of fuel cell that have received successful commercialization, benefitted from its unique advantages (including an all solid-state structure, a low operating temperature and low environmental impact). In general, the structure of PEMFCs can be regarded as a sequential stacking of functional layers, among which the gas diffusion layer (GDL) plays an important role in connecting bipolar plates and catalyst layers both physically and electrically, offering a route for gas diffusion and drainage and providing mechanical support to the membrane electrode assemblies. The GDL commonly contains two layers; one is a thick and rigid macroporous substrate (MPS) and the other is a thin microporous layer (MPL), both with special functions. This work provides a brief review on the GDL to explain its structure and functions, summarize recent progress and outline future perspectives.

Gas Diffusion Layer for Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells: A Review

Surface protonic conduction originates from a common phenomenon of surface adsorption of water, which occurs almost everywhere when the temperature and humidity are properly controlled. Different from the volume transport of protons inside the oxide ceramics, which exhibits an Arrhenius relationship with the temperature and asks for at least 500 °C to activate sufficiently high proton conductivity, the surface protonic conduction exhibits an anti‐Arrhenius behavior, enabling to achieve high surface proton conductivity at much lower temperature (e.g., close to room temperature). Therefore, the surface protonic conduction is attracting increasing attention due to its promising application in the areas of low temperature catalysis and solid‐state electrochemical devices. This review paper summarizes recent progress on the mechanism, materials, influential factors, and characterization methods of the protonic conduction on the surface of oxide ceramics, and discusses present problems and future perspectives.
