MPLS VPN is growing in front of the other network layer tunneling technologies of the OSI model. The trend related to this technology is justified mainly by the security, the quality of service that it can offer, and especially the routing speed. The main limitation of MPLS VPN is in the deployment complexity; this technology relies on several protocols to establish a tunnel, such as OSPF, BGP, MP-BGP, RSVP, and LDP. Software Defined Network avoids these complexities through the controller entity that supports the establishment of an MPLS VPN tunnel automatically, provided that the equipment to orchestrate is new generation supporting the SDN protocols. However, for budgetary and functional constraints, companies can not completely and immediately change their transport networks by equipment supporting SDN. Hybrid SDN networks address these constraints, providing the ability to orchestrate even equipment that does not support SDN, called a legacy. We propose in this paper a new hybrid intelligent SDN approach for MPLS VPN management in the digital environment. This approach is tested on a network consisting of routers of different manufacturers (Cisco, HP, and Juniper). The proposed approach is accompanied by a WEB graphic tool offering the administrator the possibility to choose the MPLS VPN architecture to deploy (Central Service, Hub-Spoke, and Intranet/Extranet) or customize its own architecture according to the customer’s request. In order to evaluate our model, we subjected it to a scalability test and an evaluation of the quality of experience to measure the satisfaction of the users who tried it.

Smart hybrid SDN approach for MPLS VPN management on digital environment

Virtual Private Networks through Multi-Protocol Label Switching technology (MPLS VPN) is no longer considered a simple technology connects securely remote sites, but especially a promoter industrial market. Like any other industrial project, before deploying the MPLS VPN solution, the operator must ensure that his network meets the client requirements and especially see how this network behaves in various constraints. The ideal therefore is to simulate the network environment in a specialized simulator with identical equipment. The MPLS VPN simulation is not an easy task given several reasons: (i) the network scales are often very large, (ii) MPLS VPN architectures are multiple, and each requires deployment rules, (iii) a project can sometimes contain a thousand different scenarios, (iv) a simple parameterization error may jeopardize the reliability of the obtained results, etc. Given these challenges, we propose by this paper a new platform for automating MPLS VPN simulation under different simulators. The platform is accompanied by a new web tool allowing the ease of its manipulation. The platform has been tested under OPNET Modeler, the results obtained have shown that the time required to generate 800 scenarios does not exceed one minute in total.

New smart platform for automating MPLS virtual private network simulation

Traditional networks have no longer a place among Internet service providers. The telecommunications industry is currently moving towards the trade of Internet services. Next Generation Networks (NGN) are a perfect match for clients' needs in terms of access to new services with better quality of service (QoS). However, with the diversity of QoS mechanisms and transport protocols and unparalleled openness of clients to the new multimedia services, the service provider must evaluate the performance of its architecture with each parameter cited to ensure that the QoS provided meets the clients' requirements. In this paper, we will measure and evaluate the impact various QoS mechanisms on the performances of transported applications under the Riverbed Modeler simulator. The traffic used for the simulations is Voice over IP (VoIP), File Transfer Protocol (FTP) and HTTP applications were used to stress the network. The evaluation criteria are on the jitter, the end-to-end delay, and the VoIP loss rate.

Quality of Service Performance Evaluation of Next-Generation Network

Towards an Efficient Resource Allocation based on Software-Defined Networking approach

The Virtual Private Network (VPN) service offered by the Multi-Protocol Label Switching Protocol (MPLS) is more and more solicited by clients thanks to its various advantages that it can offer especially concerning the security, the quality of service, and the flexibility. MPLS VPN relies on multiple protocols to function correctly and can be represented according to different architectures, each of which requires its own configuration. Besides, this technology is often used to interconnect a high number of sites which makes it challenging to deploy, manage, and supervise. Software Defined Network (SDN) is a paradigm, which, thanks to a centralized point (controller) can manage the MPLS VPN tunnels in an automatic, dynamic, and on-demand way between all the clients’ equipment. To manage the equipment by an SDN controller, they must be of the new generation supporting the OpenFlow protocol. The hybrid SDN paradigm allows Legacy equipment to be included in the orchestration as well, reducing OPEX and CAPEX costs. By the present work, we propose a new approach (SH-SDN) SDN Hybrid for the management of different architectures MPLS VPN based on a new graphical interface. The proposed approach allows not only to manage the MPLS VPN tunnels but also to ensure a reasonable quality of service level by performing an adaptive and an optimal load balancing across the multiple paths. The approach has been implemented and tested in a virtual test network consisting of different manufacturers (Cisco, Juniper, and HP). The results show that the SH-SDN approach offers a remarkable reduction in the MPLS VPN tunnel establishment time in a large network and a reasonable quality of service level of the transported applications through the multipath routing improved process.

Smart Hybrid SDN Approach for MPLS VPN Management and Adaptive Multipath Optimal Routing

IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) is a standardized Next Generation Network (NGN) architecture, used to provide users access to different services even in case of roaming. Although this architecture is deployed in cellular (mobile) networks, the latter represents several limitations, notably in terms of security. To overcome this inadequacy, IPsec protocol can be deployed between user equipment (UE) and Proxy Call Session Control Functions (P-CSCF). This solution has certain limitations in terms of reliability, i.e. the same security policy deployed between UE and P-CSCF will be applied to any type of the client traffic. In other words, if network performances are critical and the security policy deployed requires high processing, the transported traffic of real-time characteristic will suffer from a quality deterioration. In this work, we propose a new approach for the adaptive management of the IPsec protocol for IMS architectures, called Smart Adaptive Security for IMS, an acronym for SAS-IMS.

SAS-IMS for smart mobile security in IP multimedia subsystem

Cognitive radio (CR) technology has been proposed as a solution for the issue of spectrum under-utilization in wireless communication. It is designed to facilitate effective utilization of the spectrum and to provide highly reliable communication for all the network users. As it is presented in the literature, spectrum sensing (SS) is the important function to establish cognitive radio networks. In this paper, we investigate the effect of random sampling on the maximum eigenvalue based detection. The performance of this approach is evaluated in terms of its receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC curve) based on Monte-Carlo simulation and its probability of detection for different values of signal to noise ratio (SNR) and of smoothing factor L. Obtained results give a probability of detection PD = 1 which shows that it is possible to perform a spectrum sensing method by applying random sampling.

Maximum Eigenvalue Based Detection Using Jittered Random Sampling

Cognitive radio is a mechanism allowing dynamic access to spectrum channels. Since its beginnings, researchers have been working on using this inventive technology to control and manage the spectrum resources. Consequently, this research field has been progressing rapidly and important advances have been made. Spectrum sensing is a key function of cognitive radios that helps prevent the harmful interference with licensed users, as well as identifies the available spectrum to improve its utilization. Several spectrum sensing techniques are found in scientific literature. In this paper, we investigate the effect of the random sampling in spectrum sensing. We propose a spectrum sensing approach based on the energy detection and on the maximum eigenvalue detection (MED) combined with random sampling. The performance of the proposed approach is evaluated in terms of the receiver operating characteristics curves and in terms of the detection probability for different values of signal to noise ratio. The obtained results are compared to the uniform sampling case to show the added value of random sampling.
