In an effort to produce non-toxic and economically viable “green” protocols for waste water treatment, researchers are actively involved to develop versatile and effective silver nanoparticles (SNPs) as nano-catalyst from bio-based techniques. Since, p-nitrophenol (PNP) is one of the anthropogenic contaminants, considerable attention has been focused in catalytic degradability of PNP in wastewater treatment by curtailing serious effect on aquatic fauna. Ingestion of contaminants by aquatic organisms will not only affect the aquatic species but is also a potential threat to human health, especially if the toxic contaminants are involved in food chain. In this short report, we provided a comprehensive insight on few remarkable nanocatalysts especially based on SNPs and its biopolymer composites synthesized via ecofriendly “green” route. The beneficiality and catalytic performance of these silver nanocatalysts are concisely documented on standard model degradation reduction of PNP to p-aminophenol (PAP) in the presence of aqueous sodium borohydride. The catalytic degradation of PNP to PAP using SNPs follows pseudo first order kinetics involving six-electrons with lower activation energy. Furthermore, we provided a list of highly effective, recoverable, and economically viable SNPs, which demonstrated its potential as nanocatalysts by focusing its technical impact in the area of water remediation.

Catalytic Degradability of p-Nitrophenol Using Ecofriendly Silver Nanoparticles

Abstract The cost-effective and environmental friendly biosynthesis of metal nanoparticles is becoming increasingly important in biomedical science. This study biosynthesized zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) from pumpkin seed extract and assessed its anticancer activity by using different molecular biology experiments in human breast cancer (MDA-MB-231) cell lines. The well-known analytical techniques, such as UV-visible spectrophotometry, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), were used to confirm the synthesis and characterize the morphological and structural features of biogenic ZnO NPs. The formation of spherical nanoparticles with an average size of 50–60 nm was recorded using scanning electron microscopy and TEM. We observed the dose-dependent increase in cytotoxicity of ZnO NPs in the MDA-MB-231 cell line with a 50% inhibitory concentration of 10 µg/mL. Moreover, the ZnO NPs also showed significant cell morphology changes, apoptosis induction, and reactive oxygen species production at the highest tested concentration. The cellular adhesion and migration assay indicated cell death and inhibition in the migration of breast cancer cells in response to ZnO NPs’ treatment. These results clearly demonstrated the significant anticancer potential of ZnO NPs against the studied breast cancer cell line. However, an extension of this study is recommended in different cancer models and, based on the results, in vivo validation should be done.

Biosynthesis of ZnO NPs from pumpkin seeds’ extract and elucidation of its anticancer potential against breast cancer

Abstract Plant-mediated silver nanoparticles are unique and are considered one of the best nanomaterials used in cancer research. We report a low-cost, eco-friendly process of green synthesis of AgNPs from Commiphora gileadensis stem extracts and evaluated their anticancer potential against colon cancer cell lines HCT-116, HT 29, and SW620. Anticancer activities were performed by an MTT assay and gene expression levels of four genes CHEK1, CHEK2, ATR, and ATM by the real-time polymerase chain reaction. Particles were initially confirmed by UV-visible spectroscopy. The morphology and stability of the particles were examined through TEM, zeta potential, and zeta sizer. GC-MS and FTIR were performed to examine the functional groups. The absorption peak was recorded at 430 nm; the average size recorded by TEM images was 13 nm, while the zeta potential and zeta sizer study showed aggregation in nanoparticles. Compared to C. gileadensis extracts, some of the FT-IR spectrum peaks were sight shifted with some new peaks in C. gileadensis AgNPs. C. gileadensis AgNPs were more toxic against HT29 followed by HTC116 and SW620. Expression levels of most of the genes in HCT116 and HT29 were increased by treatment whereas the gene expression level was least affected in SW620. C. gileadensis AgNPs have anticancer potential and need to be explored in cancer research.

Anticancer potential of biogenic silver nanoparticles using the stem extract of Commiphora gileadensis against human colon cancer cells

Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.) is a natural aromatic plant that belongs to the family of Lamiaceae. The rosemary plant has been utilized to preserve food due to its ability to prevent oxidation and microbial contamination. This study aimed to investigate the effect of fortifying yoghurt with rosemary extracts and probiotic bacteria (LAB) (Bifidobacterium longum ATCC15707 and two lactic acid bacteria, Streptococcus thermophilus and Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus) on its chemical composition, total phenolic compounds, antioxidant capacity, and sensory properties. The study results revealed significant differences in the total solids, protein, and ash content when rosemary concentration increased beyond 2%. However, there were no significant differences among the treatments in acidity and pH value. The sensory evaluation results indicated that the addition of aqueous extract of rosemary affected the sensory properties of yoghurt (flavour, body and texture, appearance, and overall grade), wherein an increasing concentration of rosemary extract increased score of flavour, body and texture, appearance, and overall grade. On the other hand, rosemary extract did not affect the sensory properties and chemical composition. To sum up, it can be stated that rosemary was used in the preparation of yoghurt with increased health benefits, acceptable sensory attributes, and the production of synbiotic yogurt.

Effect of Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.) Supplementation on Probiotic Yoghurt: Physicochemical Properties, Microbial Content, and Sensory Attributes.

Abstract Green synthesized nanoparticles from plant extracts are being used in various biomedical applications, particularly because of their bactericidal and cytotoxic activities. In this study, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were successfully synthesized from the Rosmarinus officinalis aqueous leaf extract. Different spectroscopic and microscopic analyses such as ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy were performed to verify the biosynthesized AgNPs in our sample. The formation of nanosilver particles was preliminarily confirmed by UV-vis spectroscopy at 400 nm. The presence of carboxylic or amide groups was confirmed by FTIR, for the reduction of the silver ion. Transmission electron microscopy confirmed a particle size of 12–22 nm. The prepared AgNPs showed good antibacterial activity against human pathogens and good cytotoxic activity against the human breast cancer cell line (MDA MB 231). The nanoparticles prepared from R. officinalis can be used for various biomedical applications.
