Mental health key to tourism infrastructure in China's new megapark

During the last two centuries, fire suppression has critically modified boreal ecosystems in northern Scandinavia and has undoubtedly affected indigenous Sami land use. We inventoried Sami toponyms referring to fire in a municipality located in Swedish Sapmi, and investigated their past and present meanings by analyzing Sami dictionaries and conducting semi-structured interviews with Sami reindeer herders. We use toponyms based on the Sami word ‘roavve’ - a lichen-rich pine-heath that has burned - as a description of past ecosystems to inventory understory and tree vegetation and date the last occurrence of fire in 15 ‘roavve’ places. The inventories showed that some ‘roaave’ places have developed a late succession vegetation type, reducing their suitability for reindeer grazing. We argue both that fire suppression strongly influences the ecological trajectory of these sites and that one must take into account ethnoecological considerations when using toponyms as ecological markers to fully understand their meanings and avoid misinterpretation.

Forest Fire and Indigenous Sami Land Use: Place Names, Fire Dynamics, and Ecosystem Change in Northern Scandinavia

Cet article expose et analyse les usages de la foret chez les peuples fenniques et sames. Les peuples fen- niques et sames forment le groupe occidental des peuples finno-ougriens ; plusieurs d’entre eux sont des peuples minoritaires. Ils vivent en Scandinavie, Estonie, Lettonie et Russie. Proches de la nature, et habitants generalement en zone rurale (habitat isole ou en villages forestiers), les representations et symboliques de ces peuples sont sous-tendues par une cosmogonie et une cosmologie particulieres, empreintes de rapports Homme-Nature fortement ancres. La foret boreale constitue l’environnement au sein duquel les societes fen- niques se sont installees, formant un socioecosysteme unique. Cet article detaille les usages traditionnels de la foret chez ces communautes, et interroge leurs perpetuations et leurs soutenabilites. Parallelement sont evoquees les mutations affectant ces usages.

Entre perpétuations et mutations : ethnographie des usages forestiers chez les peuples fenniques et sames

In this study, I explore the culture of the north in Finnish and Swedish Lapland. I analyse the interconnection and importance of culture regarding the well-being of older people in this northern region. Both local and indigenous Sami people live in the northern parts of Finland and Sweden. They have a distinct culture related to their natural environments. They also have their traditional way of life, which carries their cultural identity. Transformation in the North is generating tension for the Northern culture. Cultural activities are affected by ongoing transformations in the north, which have different impacts on the ageing population in this region. In this regard, I examine the threats and challenges to the well-being of the older population. I explore these issues based on data I collected between 2012 and 2017 in Finnish and Swedish Lapland.

Understanding Ancestral Land as a Definer of Indigeneity : The Evidence of Toponyms from the Semai and Tl'azt'en Cultural Contexts

For the Sami people, place names provide the basis for the transmission of a cultural landscape, through an oral way of mapping built around narratives and the designation of specific landmarks. Based on interviews with members of a mountain-based reindeer herding community in Sweden, we found that their transmission is today ensured through continued oral tradition but also by the increasing use of maps. However, because they follow the western cartographic tradition, official maps are unable to express the continual renewal of Sami place names and the land features that are meaningful to the Sami, and thus fail to convey toponymic knowledge. Inscribing place names on maps transforms them into mere labels: toponymic knowledge has to be transmitted along with its context of emergence, situated at the crossroads of cognitive, perceptive, emotional, and social dimensions.
