Purpose - Critical scholarship on work-life balance (WLB) and its associated practices maintains that workplace flexibility is more than a quasi-functionalist response to contemporary problems faced by individuals, families or organisations. Beginning with Fleetwood’s contention that WLB discourses have become "detached" from their associated practices, this paper explores how workplace practices support or challenge dominant WLB discourses evident in socio-cultural, political and organisational sources. 

Design/methodology/approach - We analyse individual and group interview transcripts derived from 122 white-collar employees in two different organisational contexts (one public, one private) in the construction industry in Australia. 

Findings - Four major themes were identified in the data which illustrate discourse practice gaps. First, the demands facing this particular industry/ sector were framed as heightened and unique. Second, productivity was prioritised, dominating employees’ care-giving and lifestyle concerns. Third, employees’ caring responsibilities were communicated as personal and individual choices. Fourth, commitment and efficiency were judged on the basis of presence in the workplace. 

Research limitations/implications - Even in industries that have embraced WLB, workplace practices legitimate and reinforce the status quo, and maintain a gap between the promises of WLB and its potential to ameliorate conflict and assist workers to span the boundaries of paid work and other life domains.

Originality/value - While the practices demonstrated in the research are focused on one industry, the study provides a critical analysis of how the contextually-influenced meaning of WLB is constructed, created and contested in these workplaces and the effects it produces.

Critique on occupational safety and health in construction sector: An Indian perspective

Competency mapping with Sugeno fuzzy inference system for variable pay determination: A case study

This study aims to examine the influence of different brand personalities on buyers' purchase intention and examines the role of buyers' brand attitude. Data were collected through questionnaire survey. Analysis of 317 valid responses was carried out using AMOS 20. Five brand personality attributes such as responsibility, activity, emotionality, ruggedness, and competence were found to be prime brand personalities to predict buyer's brand purchase intention. Effects of these personalities except emotionality were found to influence buyers' brand purchase intention through the mediating effects of buyers' brand attitude. The findings will help the organizations in designing and redesigning their product differentiation to position the brand in the market to enhance the conversion rate of potential customers. This study identifies five brand personality attributes those are more decisive in inducing buyers' purchase intention in Indian context than other brand personality attributes those are commonly thought to be associated with cell phones.

Revisiting Brand Personality Attributes: Mediating Role of Brand Attitude

Purpose




The present paper is an attempt to understand the various concepts related to financial literacy. For the development of this paper, secondary data have been considered by visiting various sources of information. The reviews are made on four parameters, which include social exclusion among tribes, government initiatives for tribal development, socio-economic condition of tribes and impact of financial literacy on the lives of tribes. The purpose of this paper is to identify the variables and to undertake an empirical research on this topic. It is found that excluded from income-generating activities, formal education, political system are not getting adequate exposure for maintaining the standard of living. Mostly, the changing economic scenario of consumers, discrimination of wage and employment, lack of capital and financial literacy leads to the mismanagement of money. The financial products are the various causes of financial exclusion and need to be addressed through adequate financial literacy. Moreover, the study attempts to understand the various reasons of financial exclusion and to comprehend the empirical research on the topic as well.




Design/methodology/approach




The present paper is based on the secondary data. In this regard, various sources of information have been visited to collect the data.




Findings




The study finds that owing to exclusion from income-generating activities, lack of formal education, absence of patronage political in adequate means for maintaining an acceptable standard of living, caste discriminations, poverty and migration, exploitation in the hands of money lenders, marginal increase in income, absence of infrastructure, unemployment, lack of financial literacy and its resultant mismanagement of money among the tribal community has pushed them to the utter stage of poverty universally.




Originality/value




The paper can help administrators and the policymakers of different regions across the world to take appropriate measures to focus on educating the people on different financial products and to increase the accessibility. Moreover, the paper can help research scholars to build platform of their research banking upon the data presented in this study.

Mainstreaming tribals through financial literacy – a review of literature

Population growth and urbanization have encouraged the entire world to revamp the sanitation system safely through a proper Faecal Sludge Management (FSM) value chain. Faecal Sludge (FS) is a mixture of human excreta in partially digested and semisolid form, mainly collected from onsite sanitation facilities and usually is discharged into open drains and water bodies. Hence, a well-planned FSM is required to ensure safe collection, transportation, treatment, and disposal of onsite collected excreta to make a pollution free environment. The present review paper analyzed various treatment technologies available for FS along with their end products. An overview of the current global situation on FSM, basic design of a Faecal Sludge Treatment Plant (FSTP), waste treatment mechanism and end use of treatment products are also discussed. This study observed that the solid portion of the FS is used as manure, soil conditioner and energy producer whereas the liquid part is used for the purpose of gardening, car-washing, and road-washing.
