Leather processing requires substantial inputs of energy, water and chemicals. Additionally, it generates significant amounts of liquid and solid waste, severely impacting the environment. Processing 1 Mg of raw hides yields up to 600-700 kg of waste, considerable amounts of which are solid tannery waste. Such waste contains chromium (Cr) compounds, which are commonly used as tanning agents. This paper reviews solid tannery waste treatment technologies, with emphasis on waste incineration in a specially designed experimental tunnel incinerator. Three different types of tannery waste were subjected to tests: trimmings, shavings and buffing dust. As the research revealed, the process can be applied to all types of solid tannery waste. Moreover, it enables the reuse of the heat of the process and results in a Cr concentrate in the process residues. The conducted analyses (carbon, hydrogen and nitrogen elemental analysis; inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy; powder X‑ray diffraction) proved that there is no or little organic content in the obtained residual ash, which contains up to 53.1%(w/w) Cr in the form of Cr (III) oxide. Such material may be used as a Cr ore substitute in the chemical or metallurgical industries.

Chromium Concentrate Recovery From Solid Tannery Waste in a Thermal Process.

The slaughterhouse and poultry industry is possibly one of the fastest-growing sectors driven by the increasing demand in food availability. Subsequently, the wastes produced from the slaughterhouse and poultry industry are in huge quantities, which could be a promising resource for the recovery of value added products, and bioenergy production to minimize the dependence on fossil fuels. Furthermore, the wastes from slaughterhouses and poultry are a hub of pathogens that is capable of infecting humans and animals. This demands the emerging need for an effective and safe disposal method to reduce the spread of diseases following animal slaughtering. In light of that, the state of the production of slaughterhouse and poultry wastes was presented at first. Following this, the impact of solid waste exposure in terms of air, water, and soil pollution and the associated health challenges due to improper solid waste management practices were presented to highlight the importance of the topic. Secondly, the potency of these solid wastes and the various waste-to-energy technologies that have been employed for effective management and resource utilization of wastes generated from slaughterhouses and poultry were reviewed in detail. Finally, this review also highlights the opportunities and challenges associated with effective solid waste management, future requirements for the development of effective technologies for the recovery of value added products (like keratin, fibreboards), and biofuel production.

Solid waste generated from the leather industry is a major environmental challenge in developing countries such as Bangladesh to achieve sustainability in the leather sector. Mismanagement of such hazardous leather solid wastes (LSWs) has a significant negative socio-economic impact and is responsible for affecting public health. As a result, managing such LSWs is essential in order to protect the environment and improve socio-economic conditions. In this regard, sustainable energy generation, such as biogas or biofuel, is both profitable and environmentally friendly. To facilitate the generation of sustainable renewable energy from LSWs, this critical review aims to (a) explore the solid waste generated in the leather industry, (b) discuss the health risks caused by leather solid waste, (c) address the prevailing policies of solid waste management in Bangladesh, (d) review the existing literature of energy generation from LSWs, and (e) offer a series of future research outlook on energy generation from LSWs. This critical review will assist researchers, scholars and relevant stakeholders to work towards efficient and sustainable actions and policies on LSWs management. 

Energy production from leather solid wastes by anaerobic digestion: A critical review

Turning problem into possibility: A comprehensive review on leather solid waste intra-valorization attempts for leather processing

Chrome-tanned leather solid wastes (leather finished trimmings (LFT) and chrome shavings (CS)) from tanneries were studied using pyrolysis and incineration. Detailed characterization of CS and LFT indicated higher calorific value of 15.77 MJ/kg and 19.97 MJ/kg respectively, which makes it suitable for thermal treatment. Thermal Gravimetric Analysis (TGA) of CS and LFT recorded a weight loss of 79.82% and 68.22% at 800 °C respectively. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy analysis for CS and LFT were also carried out. Pyrolysis of CS and LFT was carried out using a fixed bed–type pyrolysis unit at a temperature of 500 ± 10 °C for a reaction time of 30 min and three different by-products (bio-oil, biochar and pyrolytic gas) were obtained as a result of pyrolysis. From pyrolysis process, higher bio-oil yields of 52 wt.% and 49 wt.% from LFT and CS with calorific value of 28.0 and 27.8 MJ/kg respectively were obtained. The calorific values of the biochar obtained from LFT and CS were found to be 20.5 and 23.0 MJ/kg respectively. Incineration was carried out in the existing incineration facility of 150 kg/h capacity at a temperature of 1200 °C. The results of incineration process showed a higher weight reduction (93.0 wt.%) and higher concentration of gaseous emissions, revealing the need for off-gas treatment. Further, FT-IR spectra of residual ash from the incineration process revealed the occurrence of oxidation of trivalent chromium to its hexavalent form, which could be a potential raw material in the metallurgical/chemical industry for the synthesis of sodium chromate or ferrochrome alloy. Comparative experimental investigations of pyrolysis and incineration revealed that incineration could be a potential treatment and disposal option, in developing countries like India, for chrome-tanned leather solid wastes from tanneries, for producing heat energy and the residue with potential utilization viability in another industry paving a way towards circular economy.

Investigation on pyrolysis and incineration of chrome-tanned solid waste from tanneries for effective treatment and disposal: an experimental study

Abstract The increase in mineral and ash-rich waste biomass (MWB) generation in emerging economies poses critical environmental problems and bottlenecks the solid waste and wastewater treatment systems. Transforming these MWB such as sewage sludge from wastewater treatment (SSW) to biochar can be a sustainable method for their disposal and resource recovery. However, such biochar has limited applicability due to the relatively low organic content and possibly contaminated nature of SSW. This may be offset through combined pyrolysis with other MWB, which can also support municipal solid waste management. Studies on this MWB co-pyrolysis are lacking and have not yet seen successful long-term implementation. This work is the second part of authors’ research encompassing an analytical and lab-scale investigation of biochar production from MWB through pyrolysis for the case of Chennai city, India. Here, the physicochemical properties of biochar derived from lab-scale co-pyrolysis of SSW with other MWB such as anaerobic digestate from waste to energy plants of food, kitchen or market waste fermentation, and banana peduncles (BP) collected from vegetable markets and their thermolysis mechanism are comprehensively investigated for purpose of carbon sequestration. Also, a novel preliminary investigation of the effect of sample weight (scaling effect) on the analytical pyrolysis of biomass (BP as model substrate) is undertaken to elucidate its impact on the heat of pyrolysis and carbon distribution in resultant biochar. The maximum carbon sequestration potential of the derived biochar types is 0.22 kg CO 2 kg −1 biomass. The co-pyrolysis of MWB is exothermic and governed by the synergetic effects of the components in blends with emission profiles following the order CO 2 &gt; CH 4 &gt; CO &gt; NH 3 . Co-pyrolysis reduced the heavy metal enrichment in SSW biochar. The derived biochars can be an immediate source of N, P and S in nutrient-deficient acidic soils. The biochar has only up to 4-ring polyaromatic compounds and a residence time longer than 1 h at 500 °C is necessary to improve carbonization. The heat released during analytical pyrolysis of the model biomass and distribution of carbon in the resultant biochar are significantly influenced by scaling effects, drawing attention to the need for a more detailed scaling investigation of biomass pyrolysis.
