Journal ArticleDOI

Ciguatoxins and brevetoxins, neurotoxic polyether compounds active on sodium channels

TL;DR: Cytotoxic effects associated with sodium channel activation were evaluated for the two classes of toxins on murine neuroblastoma cells, and their acute toxicity was determined in mice, suggesting that the high toxicity of CTXs is related to sodium-dependent disturbances of the excitable membranes but might also involve other cellular mechanisms.
Journal ArticleDOI

Morphology and molecular analyses of three toxic species of gambierdiscus (dinophyceae): g. pacificus, sp. nov., g. australes, sp. nov., and g. polynesiensis, sp. nov.

TL;DR: The results suggest the usefulness of the D8–D10 portion of the Gambierdiscus LSU rDNA as a valuable taxonomic marker and consistency between species designations based on SEM microscopy and classification inferred from biochemical and genetic heterogeneities was examined.
Journal ArticleDOI

Growth and toxin production in the ciguatera-causing dinoflagellate Gambierdiscus polynesiensis (Dinophyceae) in culture

TL;DR: Toxin composition comparison between two G. polynesiensis strains suggests that the toxin profile is a stable characteristic in this species, which proved inherently more toxic than other Gambierdiscus species isolated from other geographical areas.
Journal ArticleDOI

Update on Methodologies Available for Ciguatoxin Determination: Perspectives to Confront the Onset of Ciguatera Fish Poisoning in Europe

TL;DR: This review aims to describe the methodologies available for CTX detection, including those based on the toxicological, biochemical, chemical, and pharmaceutical properties of CTXs, and to study the onset of CFP in Europe.
Journal ArticleDOI

Ciguatera risk management in French Polynesia: The case study of Raivavae Island (Australes Archipelago)

TL;DR: The findings suggest that, locally, the traditional knowledge about ciguatera may not be scientifically complete but is functionally correct, and community education resulted in self-regulating behaviour towards avoidance of high-risk fish species and fishing locations.
