Intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) is usually associated with premature infants; however, it has been estimated to occur in up to 5% of infants born at term and may be associated with different prenatal, perinatal and postnatal risk factors. The present retrospective study included toddlers aged 13-24 months, born at term (≥36 weeks), referred to the Department of Rheumatology, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in Zagreb, Croatia, because they had at least two risk factors for neurodevelopmental delay. A total of 63 patients without hemorrhage were control subjects, while 103 case patients were children with IVH. The ordinal logistic regression revealed that neurodevelopmental outcome in term infants was associated with IVH grade (p 0.05).

Congenital skull fractures of newborn are rare and create medico-legal problems. Their management is controversial. Between surgery considered too aggressive and uncertain conservative attitude, reduction by suction cup or breast pump is an alternative. The authors report their experience through a case of successful resolution of a congenital depressed skull fracture using a suction cup in a newborn at 13 day of life followed by a literature review. This technique avoids the usual complications of surgery and reduces the anxiety of parents related to surgery. It also avoids the anxiety of having a newborn with a recessed skull and a conservative attitude with uncertain outcome.

Intraventricular hemorrhage, also known as sub ependymal hemorrhage signifies the bleeding in and around the ventricles. The incidence of IVH has declined from 40 to 50% in 1970’s to 20-25% in 2010, but the absolute numbers still continue to remain significant. The risk of having IVH is inversely related to gestational and birth weight, reason why it is quite uncommon in full term neonates. Here, we present a case of full term neonate born by normal vaginal delivery and presented with seizures on second day of life. He was found to have grade 2 IVH upon imaging.

A 16-year-old Hispanic boy with a history of intermittent asthma presents to the emergency department (ED) with recurrent unprovoked seizures. The first episode was 2 weeks before this visit and was characterized by generalized tonic-clonic seizures (GCTSs), with a postictal phase of 10 minutes. He was seen in the ED during that episode, with normal findings on examination and evaluation, including a complete blood cell count, chemistry, liver function tests, urine toxicology, and a computed tomographic (CT) scan. During the current visit, he presents with a history of 2 episodes of unprovoked GTCSs 4 hours apart. The first episode lasted 5 minutes, followed by a postictal phase of 5 minutes. In the ED, he has normal physical examination findings and is discharged on oral oxcarbazepine with a diagnosis of idiopathic epilepsy. Before starting the prescribed medication, he develops another episode of GCTSs, approximately 7 to 8 minutes, with no postictal phase. Each of these episodes were preceded by coughing spells lasting 10 to 20 minutes. He has no history of fever, head trauma, recent travel, drug intake, medication use, or sick contacts.

In the ED, his vital signs are normal except for intermittent bradycardia (heart rate, 60 beats/min). Physical examination findings are normal except for bite marks on the right side of the tongue. Results of a complete blood cell count, chemistry, liver function tests, and urinalysis are within normal limits. Urine toxicology results are negative. Findings from electrocardiography (ECG), electroencephalography (EEG), and brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are normal. The patient is started on divalproex. Visual Diagnosis: Recurrent Seizures and Concomitant Skin Changes in a 16-year-old Boy

A skull fracture in a newborn infant is quite rare in modern perinatal medicine due to the improvement of training, technique and the liberal use of C-sections. However, linear and depressed fractures and cranial deformities due to prolonged labor, positioning of the head during labor and use of operators to assist deliveries are encounter occasionally. The most common cranial deformities seen are caput succedaneum, cephalhematoma and subgaleal bleeding. Rarely, skull fractures are seen. We are reporting an infant born with spontaneous depressed fracture of the skull with associated soft molding.

A 10-month-old girl presents to the clinic with a dimple at the level of the midthoracic spine that has been present since birth. The parents do not have any other concerns. Developmental milestones are appropriate for age. The mother reports that there is no discharge from the dimple, motor anomalies, or changes in bowel or bladder pattern.

The patient was born at 33 weeks’ gestation by cesarean delivery owing to fetal bradycardia. She had respiratory distress at birth and was treated with nasal continuous positive airway pressure for 1 day. The mother had a history of gestational diabetes, poorly controlled with insulin.

On physical examination, her temperature is 98.8°F (37.1°C), heart rate is 134 beats/min, and respiratory rate is 32 breaths/min. She has a dimple over the T5 spinous process; it is a very small opening without erythema or discharge (Figs 1 and 2). Mental status is appropriate for age, and no facial asymmetry or weakness is noted. She has normal sensory response to touch, normal motor examination findings with normal bulk and tone in arms and legs, and no nystagmus. She is able to crawl and has normal reflexes with absent clonus.
