Social Enterprises and Corporate Enterprises Fundamental Differences and Defining Features

According to existing literature, the core of social entrepreneurship (SE) knowledge is evolving and, as such, it has made important contributions to theoretical definitions and essential characterizations. However, more theoretical issues need to be addressed before the SE field can be fully explained and understood. In particular, the authors observe in the literature that, within empirical or conceptual studies, almost all authors use the term ‘value’, but seemingly assume the dimensions of value rather than define or analyse its connotations and components. This paper uses the value construct and its multi-faceted dimensions to deconstruct the way in which value is created in the SE context. The authors argue that an analysis based on value generation, value capture and value sharing provides important insights into the specificity of SE research and can facilitate future theorizing. Through the conceptual lens of this central concept of value emanating from value theory and business model literature, the authors abductively analyse and classify the studies, providing a practical resource. The authors discuss the phenomenon, presenting an integrative framework that facilitates a clearer understanding of the social value creation process and suggest future research areas as openings for theory development in relation to value creation, its main components and flows.

Deconstructing the Way in which Value Is Created in the Context of Social Entrepreneurship

Social entrepreneurship is an increasingly important concept in the study of voluntary and nonprofit organizations. In spite of the growing recognition of this concept, little is known about what individual characteristics might describe or explain who in society is likely to be (or become) a social entrepreneur. This preliminary study empirically addresses this question using data from a United States online panel. Our results suggest that social entrepreneurs are likely to be female, non-white, younger, and college-educated individuals with some business experience and who live in big cities. Social entrepreneurs also tend to have more social capital, as measured by their activity in clubs and organizations other than work, and they are more likely to be happy, interested in politics, extroverted, giving (to charity), and liberal ideologically. Although exploratory, these findings help describe the social entrepreneur and suggest ways in which this important actor in civil society can be better identified, understood, and perhaps cultivated.

Portrait of the Social Entrepreneur: Statistical Evidence from a US Panel

Business improvement districts (BIDs) are distinctive, formalized partnerships between the public and private sectors operating as subgovernmental units at the local level. There were more than 650 BIDs in the United States in 2008 and an estimated 1,500 worldwide. BIDs are special districts designed to bring together public, private, and civic actors to achieve comprehensive community revitalization, economic development, and quality-of-life improvements in primary business and mixed-use areas. Such partnerships appear to allow the public sector to enjoy more vigorous entrepreneurship, while allowing the private sector to utilize public authority and public processes to achieve economic and community revitalization. The Case of Business Improvement Districts: Special District Public—Private Cooperation in Community Revitalization

Business improvement districts (BIDs) offer an increasingly popular avenue of public impact, participation, and organization for invested local private actors to revitalize business centers as well as enhance local governance, services, and management capacity. The privatization aspects of BIDs have received important attention. Little attention, however, has been dedicated to BIDs as a form of public—private partnerships (PPPs), particularly the public purpose and intention—the "publicization" aspects—of these partnerships. BIDs are distinctive but uncanny partnerships between the public and private sectors, operating at the local subgovernmental level and functioning both contractually and in a strategic collaboration.
