Heart Disease and Stroke Statistics-2021 Update: A Report From the American Heart Association.

The American Heart Association, in conjunction with the National Institutes of Health, annually reports the most up-to-date statistics related to heart disease, stroke, and cardiovascular risk factors, including core health behaviors (smoking, physical activity, diet, and weight) and health factors (cholesterol, blood pressure, and glucose control) that contribute to cardiovascular health. The Statistical Update presents the latest data on a range of major clinical heart and circulatory disease conditions (including stroke, congenital heart disease, rhythm disorders, subclinical atherosclerosis, coronary heart disease, heart failure, valvular disease, venous disease, and peripheral artery disease) and the associated outcomes (including quality of care, procedures, and economic costs).The American Heart Association, through its Statistics Committee, continuously monitors and evaluates sources of data on heart disease and stroke in the United States to provide the most current information available in the annual Statistical Update. The 2022 Statistical Update is the product of a full year's worth of effort by dedicated volunteer clinicians and scientists, committed government professionals, and American Heart Association staff members. Heart Disease and Stroke Statistics—2022 Update: A Report From the American Heart Association

개인의 소득에 영향을 미치는 요인으로 교육수준, 숙련도, 개인의 능력 등 무수히 많은 요인들을 생각할 수 있다. 본 연구는 이러한 여러 요인들 중에서 특히 체형(Bodily shape)가 소득에 어느 정도 영향을 미치는가에 대한 정확한 인과관계를 고찰하고자 하였다. 본 논문에서는 체형에 대한 대리변수(Proxy variable)로 체질량지수(Body Mass Index: BMI)를 사용하였으며, BMI가 갖는 내생성을 통제하여 기존의 연구들이 정확히 고찰하지 못한 BMI가 소득에 얼마나 영향을 미치는 지에 대한 인과관계를 규명하려고 하였으며 이를 위해 Two stage estimation method를 사용하였다. 1단계 추정과정에서 식료품 소비자물가지수를 도구변수로 활용하여 BMI를 추정하였고, 이렇게 추정된 BMI를 2단계 추정과정에 사용하여 체형이 소득에 미치는 영향을 고찰하였다. 추정 결과, 전체 표본을 대상으로 한 분석에서 소득수준이 낮은 구간에서는 BMI로 표현된 체형이 소득수준에 미치는 영향이 유의하였으나, 소득수준이 높은 구간에서는 이러한 영향이 유의하지 않았다. 이를 성별로 구분하여 분석해본 결과, 여성의 경우에는 BMI가 과소체중 상태(Underweight) 및 과체중 상태(Overweight)에 해당될 경우 모두 정상체중 상태의 사람에 비해 해당소득구간 대비 고소득구간에 포함될 확률이 낮아진다는 사실을 알수 있었던 반면 남성의 경우에는 과소체중 상태의 사람들의 소득수준에 BMI의 음의 영향이 발견되었을 뿐, 과체중 상태에 있는 사람의 경우 음의 영향이 발견되지 않았다. 따라서 남성의 경우보다 여성의 경우 BMI의 소득에 미치는 영향력이 상대적으로 큰 것으로 나타났다.

Redox regulation of sirt1 in inflammation and cellular senescence

BACKGROUND Various trials have been conducted on the management of male pattern hair loss (MPHL). A variety of laser and light sources have been used for the treatment of MPHL.



OBJECTIVE To understand the effects of a 1,550-nm fractional erbium-glass laser on the hair cycle in an alopecia mouse model and to study the clinical effects of the same laser used as treatment for MPHL.



MATERIALS AND METHODS Irradiation was applied to the shaved skin of C3H/HeN mice using various energy and density settings and varied irradiation intervals. In a clinical pilot study involving human subjects, 20 participants were treated over five sessions at 2-week intervals. A fractional photothermolysis laser was used at the energy of 5 mJ and a total density of 300 spots/cm2.



RESULTS In the animal study, the hair stimulation effects were dependent upon the energy level, density, and irradiation interval. The anagen conversion of hair and the increase in Wnt 5a, β-catenin signals were observed. In the human pilot study, incremental improvements in hair density and growth rate were observed.



CONCLUSIONS This pilot study showed that a 1,550-nm fractional erbium-glass laser might induce hair growth, but more intensive studies are required to clarify the clinical applications of this treatment.

Fractional photothermolysis laser treatment of male pattern hair loss.

Background Female pattern hair loss (FPHL) is the most common cause of hair loss in women, and its prevalence increases with advancing age. Affected women may experience psychological distress and social withdrawal. A variety of laser and light sources have been tried for treatment of hair loss, and some success has been reported.

Objective  The purpose of this study was to determine the efficacy and safety of a 1550 nm fractional erbium–glass laser in treatment of female pattern hair loss.

Patients and methods  Twenty eight ethnic South Korean patients with varying degrees of FPHL were enrolled in the study. Patients received ten treatments with a 1550 nm fractional Er:Glass Laser (Mosaic, Lutronic Co., Ltd, Seoul, South Korea) at 2-weeks intervals using the same parameters (5–10 mm tip, 6 mJ pulse energy, 800 spot/cm2 density, static mode). Phototrichogram and global photographs were taken at baseline and at the end of laser treatment, and analysed for changes in hair density and hair shaft diameter. Global photographs underwent blinded review by three independent dermatologists using a 7-point scale. Patients also answered questionnaires assessing hair growth throughout the study. All adverse effects were reported during the study.

Results  Twenty seven patients completed a 5-month schedule of laser treatment. One patient was excluded during treatment due to occurrence of alopecia areata. At the initial visit, mean hair density was 100 ± 14/cm2, and mean hair thickness was 58 ± 12 μm. After 5 months of laser treatment, hair density showed a marked increase to 157 ± 28/cm2 (P < 0.001), and hair thickness also increased to 75 ± 13 μm (P < 0.001). Global photographs showed improvement in 24 (87.5%) of the 27 patients. Two patients (7.4%) reported mild pruritus after laser treatment; however, these resolved within 2 h.

Conclusion  A 1550 nm fractional erbium–glass laser irradiation may be an effective and safe treatment option for women with female pattern hair loss.

Solar ultra-violet (UV) radiation and the ensuing photo-damage are adverse factors affecting human skin directly exposed to the sun. Stress responses induced by UV radiation (UVR) elicit premature skin ageing (photoageing), resulting in extensive damage to dermal connective tissue. Disruption of the normal dermal structure of skin connective tissue, primarily collagen, impairs a variety of skin functions and is considered to be the main cause of wrinkle formation. Matrix metalloproteases (MMPs) may be responsible for the degradation of collagen and other extracellular matrix proteins, which are major targets for relieving skin photoageing. Herein, we demonstrated that Sirt1, a putative anti-ageing enzyme, reduced MMP-9 transcriptional expression in skin. The known agonists of Sirt1, resveratrol and metformin, also significantly inhibited MMP-9 expression and appeared to protect collagen from degradation after UVR. These studies suggest that the Sirt1 activator could be used as a novel therapeutic agent to delay skin photoageing.

Hyperuricemia, which has been considered as a cause of gout and nephrolithiasis has recently been suggested to be associated with hypertension, coronary heart disease, heart failure, atrial fibrillation, insulin resistance, and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Several clinical and experimental studies have supported uric acid (UA) as an independent risk factor for predicting disease development along with the traditional risk factors. The mechanism by which UA causes cardiometabolic disease has not been fully elucidated to date; however, it has been explained by several hypotheses such as oxidative stress, reduced nitric oxide bioavailability, inflammation, endothelial dysfunction, and so on. Although evidence of the preventive and therapeutic effects of UA lowering therapy on cardiometabolic diseases is still insufficient, it is expected to be considered as a new treatment strategy for such diseases through additional, carefully designed, large-scale clinical studies.
