Undesired noise and vibrations have a detrimental effect in many areas. Hence the control of vibrations has become a relevant technological challenge. Active vibration control of structures using smart materials is especially in vogue. This involves sensing the motion of the structure using sensors, generating a control signal using a controller and applying a control force on the structure using actuators. To design the control system of any vibrating structure, the mathematical model of the system is required. However, it is difficult to theoretically construct a model of complex structures. On the other hand, it is relatively simpler to model such systems in a Finite Element (FE) environment like ANSYS©. This paper deals with the extraction of the full and reduced mathematical models of a cantilever beam into MATLAB© from its FE model. The full model of the beam is reduced by discarding those modes which do not contribute to the overall response. It is found that the frequency and transient responses of the full and reduced models match closely. Hence the reduced model may be used to represent the system which in turn reduces the computational time. The controller is designed using proportional-integral-derivative theory with output feedback. SIMULINK© is then used to create a working block diagram of the control system and perform the control action. The transient responses of the controlled full and reduced models are then plotted which are found to be in close agreement. The procedure for the design of the controller described in this paper may be extended to control the vibrations of any real life system.

Active vibration control of cantilever beam by using PID based output feedback controller

It is possible to model smart structures with piezoelectric materials using the product ANSYS/Multiphysics. In this study, the integration of control actions into the ANSYS solution is realized. First, the procedure is tested on the active vibration control problem with a two-degrees of freedom system. The analytical results obtained by the Laplace transform method and by ANSYS are compared. Then, the smart structures are studied by ANSYS. The input reference value is taken as zero in the closed loop vibration control. The instantaneous value of the strain at the sensor location at a time step is subtracted from zero to find the error signal value. The error value is multiplied by the control gain to calculate the voltage value which is used as the input to the actuator nodes. The process is continued with the selected time step until the steady-state value is approximately reached. The results are obtained for the structures analyzed in other studies. The active vibration control of a circular disc is also studied.

Thin-walled flexible workpieces are known to be the most commonly used flexible elements in mechanical structures and machines in the industries of aerospace, national defense, integrated circuit production, and so on. The bottleneck of improving machining quality of thin-walled flexible workpieces lies in the workpiece deformation during machining processes. We hereby establish a machining platform for thin-walled flexible workpieces and develop a purely data-driven Sparse Bayesian learning-based method to predict the future deformation merely by using historical displacement information. Accordingly, a dual-mode predictive controller is developed to mitigate the machining vibrations, and the quality of the workpiece surface has been thus substantially improved. Finally, the superiority and effectiveness of our proposed method are demonstrated through extensive machining experiments of thin-walled flexible workpieces.

Bayesian Learning-Based Model-Predictive Vibration Control for Thin-Walled Workpiece Machining Processes
