Journal ArticleDOI

A fluorescent sensor for Cu2+ at the sub-ppm level

TL;DR: In this paper, two 4-(aminoalkyl)aminonaphthalimide compounds which exhibit fluorescence enhancement and associated spectral changes in the presence of Cu2+, Mn2+ and Ni2+ are reported.
Journal ArticleDOI

4-alkylamino-3-bromo-N-alkyl-1,8-naphthalimides: new photochemically activatable antiviral compounds

TL;DR: The synthesis of 3-bromo-4-alkylamino-N-alkyl-1,8-naphthalimides is described in this paper, which are shown to be effective, non-oxygen based photochemical inactivators of enveloped viruses, including herpes simplex virus and HIV.
Journal ArticleDOI

Synthesis and bromination of 4-alkylamino-N-alkyl-1,8-naphthalimides

TL;DR: In this paper, it was shown that the amino nitrogen of 4-amino-N-alkyl-1,8-naphthalimides is nucleophilic enough to participate in nucleophilia displacement reactions without the need for added base, despite being a vinylogous amide.
Journal ArticleDOI

Inhibition of retrovirus-induced syncytium formation by photoproducts of a brominated 1,8-naphthalimide compound

TL;DR: These findings represent the first demonstration of inhibition of retrovirus-induced syncytium formation by a photochemical product, and justify further investigation of the preactivation process of photochemicals in the treatment of systemic viral infections such as the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, in cancer therapy, and in sterilization of banked blood products.
Journal ArticleDOI

The preparation of a fluorescent dye : a microscale tlc experiment

TL;DR: In this article, the authors describe an experiment that allows the instructor to introduce TLC as a technique for analyzing reaction mixtures by monitoring the formation of a fluorescent dye and illustrate the effects of eluting solvent on elution order.
